One of the reasons why I can't help you is because you don't have a MSN messenger or aim user name so i can't chat with you to help you , there is a chance that your ISP might be blocking port 80 , go to your abyss console and change port 80 to a different port like 82 , If your using a linksys router to connect more than one PC in your house hold than you need to configure your router to work with Abyss web server , but please be careful that your ISP allows a static IP address if they don't allow a Static IP address than basicaly your screwed, here's a linksys guide to setting up a web server
http://www.offspringvideos.com/router/ 8)
if you change port 80 to 82, your web address would be

Is that a Static IP or Dynamic IP? Also do you use any appliance like a Router or Gateway?
- If you have a Router or such, you need to configure your Port.
- Having a Router or such may need to forward your PORT to the local IP of your LAN where your Abyss is located
- If you have Dynamic IP, that above IP you mention may not be correct. _________________ CapFusion,... |

If a Static IP is an IP that never changes, then I have a Static IP. And I dont have a router.
Im gonna call my ISP today, and talk to them about running a webserver on my computer. I'll post back later when I get some info. |

If it is a Static IP and no router, then I assume your LAN or current PC with Abyss is connecting directly to a MODEM or a Gateway (privided by your ISP). Normally Modem or Gateway provided from your ISP normally can not be accecssible (if correct) then it connect directly to your ISP. Also assumed all the port is open, then all you have to do is ask your friend to enter the URL of your public IP. But if the port 80 is block, then you can manually try other port and see if that port is open. Check your PC what IP it is using by enter this command >> ipconfig /all for NT/2K/XP base << >> winipcfg for Win9x base and select TCP/IP <<to see what IP your PC is using. If it show something like this 192.168.1.100 or similar, then your Modem or Gateway, may not forwarding your port 80 to the correct LAN IP of your Abyss correctly.
What Windows you are using?
If MODEM / Gateway open all the port, your Abyss listen to port 80, it should trigger it and serve your webpage request. BTW, this is dangerous in security standpoint [IMHO / IME] due to all your LAN PC as a whole can be a target for hacking.
BTW, is this Cable or DSL broadband you connecting to? _________________ CapFusion,... |

Oh well....
What exactly did they say? Check if them if the problem is the port is being block or that modem (from isp) is filtering outbound of your webserver.
You indicate you have Cable type for your ISP, then I would suggest getting a after-market modem router instead of using your ISP modem. Just make sure what type of configuration they are using so you can configure it with the after-market brand. Are you getting my point?
Normally cable modem is repreconfigure in the modem box that they offer their customer and lock it.
Anyway, try to use other port just incase they only block certain popular port like 80 or 8080 and such with the modem router they provide to you. _________________ CapFusion,... |

I changed my port number to 82, but I guess its not working either. What other ports are there?
Where can I get an after-market router? And how much would that cost?
They really didn't say much about it, just that I would have to pay for a webserver. Thats it. |

Ask them what type of configuration or standard they are using like - what DOCSIS (1.0 or 1.1 etc) certification standard they are using. Also are they setting up as PoPPE or RoadRunner ...etc
You do not have to tell them what your plan is if they sound reluctant, just ask them what setting or type of modem router / gateway they currently providing to you. As soon you know what setting or type, then next try go out and get a Cable Modem router like NetGear model (ie CM212) for cable broadband that is certified for DOCSIS. and Linksys (I can remember the model off-hand).
After you got the general idea if you can get an after-market router, make sure you can return it if it does not work for you. Find a local dealer like Fry's Electronic, BestBuy, RadioShack and so forth.
These are the listing of manufacturer for home / residential user.
www.netgear.com (CM212)
www.linksys.com
www.dlink.com (DCM-201)
Does the modem they provide to you have a manual that can tell you what it using or standard?
Normally ATT or ComCast user can go out and buy an after-market cable modem router and just dump what they provided in their closet. This way, they can do alot of stuff other than allowing them to use as a host for their webserver / FTP / Game Server etc.... And many many MANY more thing that I can not say it here. _________________ CapFusion,... |

General speaking, yes. Just make sure you know what you have and buy a similar product that does the same thing or better. This way, you can do whatever you want instead what they dictate. Again, just make sure you can return it if it turn out to be not for you. All my friend that running on Cable, they brought their own Router and disregard the ISP Cable they provide to them. Most of them use it for as a Game Server / XBox Server etc.... _________________ CapFusion,... |
