i've been looking through my access log, and every so often a website i browse to will show up in it -- for example, if i go to http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/win_beta.adp, i get the following:

127.0.0.1 - - [20/Apr/2003:03:19:26 +1133] "GET /file/adsWrapper.js HTTP/1.1" 404 485 "http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/win_beta.adp" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)"
127.0.0.1 - - [20/Apr/2003:03:19:27 +1133] "GET /file/adsEnd.js HTTP/1.1" 404 782 "http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/win_beta.adp" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)"

am i correct in assuming these are caused by the hosts file i have that redirects a bunch of ad-related addresses? and if so, is there an alternate way i could redirect them and/or prevent them from showing up in the log?

thanks, and apologies if this has been asked before

It seems that http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win/win_beta.adp wrongly asks your localhost for some pages. So you shouldn't worry.
If you want to disable that logging, set extended logging in server parameters to No.
