|
|
After some arguments over old topics being brought back up, I suggested to Aprelium that a rule to do with not bringing up old topics be added to the rules. Aprelium asked me to ask the members of the forum their views on it and weather it should be added.
My suggestion to add is this:
------
Do not bring up old topics. Old topics are considered as 2 months or more without any posts as the author may have solved their problem/question.
Do not post in old topics. Start a new thread and link to the old topic. This helps to prevent confusion when looking at the older posts.
------
The majority vote will be the vote that decides if it goes onto the rules or not.
So, Yes or No? Also your comments. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Defiantly not, if someone has more relevant information they want to add to the topic that is relevant they should be able to add it. Simply creating a new topic and linking to an old one simply creates a cluttered forum, where it may prove difficult to find information. Over time this could lead to 50+ topics linked together. Call me old fashioned but a prefer similar info to be in the same place. 8O _________________ Olly |

Good point, but cluttered topics are also a pain, which is why I suggested opening a new topic would be best. It avoids confusion. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I also agree with Olly86. You can't just close a topic after so many months if it
can still be used. I think it would be better to just close simple answered topics
that no longer become useful anymore.
Example: How do I block an IP Address in Abyss?
You can close topics like these, but topics that can still provide useful info,
should remain open. Does this sound like a better idea? |

If someone has a problem and it becomes solved, someone with a similar problem can confuse issues if its in the same topic. So creating a new one but saying you tried "x process" in "x topic" it makes it easier to follow whats in the thread, and it doesnt make the topic look cluttered. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

My answer is also NO! I've already posted my reason HERE.
No need to repeat myself over such pettiness. |

I voted no and here's another reason why. Illustrative explanation follows:
===
Day 1 Poster X, Question: How do I make a Sandwich?
Day 1 Poster A, Answer: Prepare two slices of bread. Prepare a slab of cooked meat or, if you're a vegetarian, just use some vegetables. Optionally, spread mayo/ketchup/mustard on one side of each slice of bread. Stack them together with both bread slices holding the meat and/or vegetables between them while letting the pasted side of the bread face inwards.
Day 2 Poster X, Comment: Thanks!
Day 180 Poster Y, Comment: Hey, hamburger has recently been invented. You might want to check it out at food://burgers.burp/
Day 186 Poster C, Question: How do I prepare a simple hamburger? I can't understand the instructions in the above site. Please help - I'm a newbie!
Day 200 Poster D, Answer: I found this site with easy to follow instructions. food://one-minute-burger.help/
Day 206 Poster C. Comment: Thanks, mate!
Day 412 Poster W, Comment: Anybody in this forum use hot dogs on a bun? It's easy and can be as delicious as Sandwich or Hamburger. And I can help you set it up! Just PM me.
Day 412 Poster E, Comment: Hot dogs suck!
Day 413 Poster V, Comment: To each his own, I guess. What do I know, I'm a vegan.
Day 676 Poster E, Question: Poster W, are you still around? Can you help me with my hot dogs setup?

As you can see, the subjects discussed here are basically related (or has an association) with one another. Yet all of it is contained in one nice and simple thread. Get my drift?
Writing all this just made me hungry. :/ _________________

I see both points of view but what i hate if an old post getting added and added to like in some forums that have 100's of posts and about 10 pages and you are more likly to just ignor the problem then read through loads of posts if you ask me best way is to search for your problem if not found or nothing helpful start a new topic and link to anything that might be useful that way they dont become cluttered and confusing.
As for you loloyd how the hell did you come up with that tosh. Sorry to be so rude but why? Doesn't really help at all.
Well I am in support of the rule but I do agree that some very slight exceptions can be considered to the rule.
Well I am off now too much alcohole. night. _________________ M.Carpenter

Didn't you ever wonder why old threads got brought up in the first place? Probably because people found it by making use of the Search function of the board. And then they felt that either they had a follow up question or they had something contributory to add. Those who bring up old threads probably stumbled upon those items by searching.
I must maintain that "searching first" is not the issue here. It is simply petty complaints. _________________
