|
|
Ive been running my home server for quite some time now. The other day while I was at school I decided to try and download something from my server. My server usually has an upload speed of 45 kB/s.. when my download first started it was at 150 kB/s then after 3 seconds it drops back down. Why do my download/uploads start at 150 then within 3 seconds it goes down to 45... any ideas?
also.. anyone know of any ways to speed up the performance of winxp home edition?
Thanks! :D |

It's just a mathematical error. The download rate reported is an average over a period of time. In the first 3-10 seconds of a download there isn't much data to average, and therefore the reported speed can be way off. |

ah.. ok that makes sense, thanks :D, have any advice on improving XP performance? The reason I ask is my parents old 433 Mhz computer runs XP better than my server thats 512 Mhz.. my server also have more RAM.. i dont get it, the only thing different is that my server has SP2 on it... does SP2 really slow down a computer that much?... Im thinking of going back to Win2k, but hear that XP actually has better performance and memory management. |

XP on either of those must run like crap. Just make sure all your visual "additives" are off. basically, it should visually look like windwos 98/2000. Also check and make sure all services are turned off that arn't needed. |

SP2 will slowly cause your PC to get slower and slower until you can no longer bear it and start hitting it because it won't work. I know this from experience :-)
I suggest not using SP2 unless it needs to installed for certain things on your PC to work (some need it for better CPU management or for some drivers to work).
Since discovering the damage SP2 does Ive stopped using it and low and behold, my PC's work fine again. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

i do have all the visual stuff off, i even lowered the resolution to 800 x 600 instead of 1024 x 768...
Is windows 2000 a better choice for me? |

XP is fine if you dont use service packs. Resolution changes makes no difference, use what you are comfortable with. Its SP2 that makes the computers get slow. All mine work fine but my dad, who has SP2 hardly uses his PC and its slow, and its only a bit older than mine. Theres hardly any programs on it. All he does is browse and send e-mails. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
