|
|
Hello,
Well I used to have this web server awhile back, until I had to get rid' of my internet connection, but now that I have gotten it back to broadband speed I am wanting to re-startup my website. Anyway for some reason I can only view my website through the localhost while others cannot see it at all, now both my firewalls are shut off completely (window firewall and the modem firewall) I called my DSL provider (verizon) and they don't block port 80, which doesn't matter regardless since I changed the ports with no luck still. My main theory is that it wont work because I am using windows XP home, when before I had professional. I did a little research and downloaded the Active Ports program only to find that Abyss is the only application to be using port 80 and 9999, I would like to stick with port 80 if possible, many places block websites with ports beyond 80. If anyone might have some kind of resolution to this problem please let me know , it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a router? If so did you enable port forwarding? Check www.portforward.com for information on how to configure port forwarding on your router if you have one.
EDIT: XP home is fine for running a server, as is any other OS. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Are you sure you are getting the correct WAN IP address? Go to www.abyssunderground.co.uk/ip to find it out.
Use a proxy such as www.proxify.com to test it. If your modem doesnt support loop-back then you wont be able to test it yourself. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I'm not sure if it supports loop back, but without knowing I tried www.proxify.com, now I guess that site has high usage and is only allowing use to subscibers, so I found another site at http://www.proxyway.com/www/check-ip-address/whatis-my-ip-address.html (please, let me know if that site is not what I'm looking for) I typed in the number only to get the same IP I have been using all along (I know if my modem doesn't support loop-back that number may still be in-correct). Now for my next test, I tried the other website you gave me about port forwarding at www.portforward.com and I was surprised to see my modem on the list, unfortunately on that huge list of programs they give you after selecting my modem, Abyss wasn't listed...so I tried the apache link, after following those steps I still result in the same thing as always... |

You need a proxy. I have one and I will PM you the link so you can test your IP on it. (An error 500 will occur if it cant find a URL you give it, its normal).
Follow the steps for HTTP or WEBSERVER on portforward.com. Apache should be fine as it is a webserver.
Other than that Im afraid Im of no use to you. TRUSTpunk is the guy to ask for networking. He helps people all the time and has a 99.9% of success. Ill get him to look at this thread.
Check your PM's. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I finally got it working after tampering with it all day, turns out the modem I use acts as a router itself, I had to go in and open ports on the modem/router and allow connections to be made to the computer through the modem/router. The firewalls I had previously turned off were my windows firewall and my antivirus firewall. |

Glad you got it working. I didnt think of the modem being like a router as well. Its not very common I dont think. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Most ethernet based ADSL modems are now actually modem/routers - it's only the cheap and cheerful USB ones you get from ISPs that turn out to be a generic ADSL modem...
It would have helped if the OP actually stated a model number/maker for their hardware and someone could have just told them it was a router to start with... _________________

Really? In Australia, not that anyone cares :P, All the ADSL deals come with a modem/router. In fact I've never seen a generic ADSL only modem in my life.
Just to list a few ISP's;
http://www.iprimus.com.au/broadband-pricing.asp?refcode= (My ISP)
http://www.bigpond.com/
http://www.optusnet.com.au/ (Shameful, do not click me!)
and many many others... Too many in fact.
We really need a full on quide for beginners to get up and going, not several mini ones (Not that they arn't any good! I'm a complete idiot and look what happened.. [don't comment :) ] ) tho, and where neccessary a small section stating common problems and how to solve them.
-------------------------------------- EDIT --------------------------------------
My modem is a Netcomm NB5 ADSL-2 Modem Router with USB 2.0 and Ethernet connections. |
