MrWiseOne wrote: | Ok has anyone even had a look? Add your dam links now lol!. | Went and had a look - not bad for a 13yr old. There are a couple of very annoying things, tho'. The images you use on your site take an eternity to load (even on a 1500/256 broadband connection). The reason they take so long is that you are using the browser to scale them down. Make a duplicate set of images resized to the thumb size you want to use and display those instead. The site will fly once you do that.
Also, the green background colour makes the white text very hard too read. Might be okay for someone using 800x600 resolution but for those of us who use higher resolution settings it is almost impossible to read.
I would have made these remarks to you on your website but you have no active feedback link on the site. All in all a pretty good job! :) _________________ Cheers.... Kev

Its not that his images are large, its the fact his upload speed is so poor. If I remember correctly its only 128Kbps. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

That's what i thought too, but I did do a "view source" and found that the thumbs are directly linked to the image and then resized in the HTML code. It's probably the same reason his sig graphic here takes so long to load. _________________ Cheers.... Kev

Quite right - but I believe my comments about the website are still valid. I noticed another thread here about site speed and, on checking, found that the site concerned did the same thing - used the actual image for the thumb and reduced it in the HTML code. And it is painfully slow when you go to the image gallery - page loads dynamite quick but the images just go on and on. _________________ Cheers.... Kev

He never said you had an image gallery, he was talking about someone else with the same problem.
None of your images are scaled down eh? I just checked and the "file bug reports" one is.
Just because your sig originates from a file that size means nothing. Mine originates from one 100KB in size. So what? _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

MrWiseOne wrote: | Kev how old are you? I think you underestimate my knowledge very much so.. | You are young enough to be my grandchild. You did ask... :)
MrWiseOne wrote: | Also My upload is 128 kbps and I have no image gallery and none of my pictures are scaled down in html. | I never said that you did have an image gallery. Read my posts thoroughly before you try to flame. You do, however, have some clickable images on the site that are scaled down in HTML. My suggestion was designed to help you - it was in no way a criticism.
MrWiseOne wrote: | My sig also orignates from a 23.5 kb file so hack that... | As Inquisitor pointed out it's in a .png format which does, unfortunately, take a long time to display. Convert it to a gif or jpeg and the problem will go away.
MrWiseOne wrote: | EDIT: Did you not read the contact page? | I did.
MrWiseOne wrote: | My Resolution is 1280 x 1024 pixels... | Again, you misread me. I never made any mention of you using any particular resolution. I was simply pointing out that the colours clashed - might be great for someone with 20/20 vision but for anyone else it is hard to read. I know it may be "cool" but the idea of a wesbite is to attract visitors and you do yourself a dis-service by alienating many who would return if they could read the site easily.
I aplogise if you were offended - that was never my intent. However, if you can't take advice or criticism then perhaps you should not be running a wesbite that is open to the public. Feedback - good or bad - is what makes websites better and in turn makes us, the authors, better at what we do. _________________ Cheers.... Kev

There was an argument just last week about sigs that are that large. Make it smaller in size as well as filesize. I agree mine maybe slightly too big but yours is over the top. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

You think its fine but for other people it isnt. It may come from a jpeg, (mine is from a png) but it displays as a png. Change it to jpeg and it will be smaller, faster, and wont annoy people as much. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Then perhaps you should use google or stop asking stupid questions and giving stupid comments.
I dont mean to be rude but there is only so much "stupidity" and "annoyance" a person can take.
Use your common sense and find out how to do it. You wont have much luck in life unless you do! _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

You use Fireworks, right?
Just go to File > Export Preview and change the filetype in the dropdown box.
You can also change the quality, if you want. But, it's not required because the filesize will be auto-reduced.
Hit Export and save. There, you're done. |

And use imagejpeg instead of imagepng or whatever it is you're currently using. _________________

I think his problem is that he doesnt have much of a common sense, or, if he does, he refuses to use it.
Either that or he is just having us on and just taking the ****. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Actually, I think that the problem is that he copied an example and didn't know what function did what.
I agree with you that there are some very unecessary posts which annoy me too, but in this case where he asks a valid question, you're too quick to tell him to use google, simply because you know the answer. A simple "Use the imagejpeg function instead of the imagepng function." would have sufficed. _________________

I agree, I did know the answer but people have to learn to use google before posting a question. 99% of questions can be answered with a quick google search. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

is it even possible to underestimate the knowledge of a 13 year old??
As stated Kev is old enough to be your grandfather and i am old enough to be your Father,so i would expect that we have both forgoten more than youe would even know as a 13 year old.
If you ask for other peoples opinions, donot try and flame them if you get an undesierable response. After all there giving there time to give you there views. Someone with even a decent knowledge would take this as constructive critisism and use it to there advantage.
I sugest you dont ask for comments if you dont want a negetive response.
After all not everyone will like your site and at 13 donot think you know it all.
You have a long way to go before you reach as i would say "A Knowledgable Designer"

Thats some nice comments, but we have tried explaining this to MrWiseOne before. He seems to ignore it (no offence) so we leave him to it. When the new forum rules come into effect it may teach him, and other people a lesson on proper posting and when the time to post is right or even worth it.
I was the same once, but I soon learnt and am now a well known member of the forums. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

This is where having a decent "KNOWLEDGE' comes into it.Yes there is alot of bull on google but, the knowledgable (who do have a brain) can decipher this and the unknowledgable take it as 100% truth. Google is the number 1 search engine for good reasons MrWiseOne, it is the best starting point for most questions and there is very few answers that canot be found using a google-search.If what your saying is that asking a stupid question on Aprelium and waiting for a response that suits your criteria is better than a google search then maybee we all overestemate your knowledge.
But then again you canot flame google results can you.:-) |

I read the first few lines and could not continue. Your so mean!
I feel so imbarrassed for posting this topic now hehe it was about 3 months ago and it would seem i have become more "knowledgeable" since then. I did seem a bit cocky back then didn't I. =)
I just read the rest of your post werhere, first off why'd you start an old topic 0.o? Secondly Google is my favourite site on the net seriously, I don't what I'd do without and my impression of most of your post is that you think I think that Google sucks..?
Anyways. =) |

Im sorry if you think i was being mean as i certainly wasent trying to be.
I was just trying to make a small point. I think i have made it.
And i usually donot look at the date of a thread instead i read the text and then give my comment if i feel its needed.
Im sorry for posting to such an old thread and indeed hope you are becoming more knowledgable as you seem quite clever for your age.
And i never said or posted that you think google sucks..I was just pointing out that you choose not to use it to your advantage sometimes. As with alot not just you.
Inquisitor and i were simply pointing out it is far quicker and far less time consuming to others if you did a quick search before posting, then if you cant find an answer ask here,It is just the sensible way.
By the way i do like your site and think its a good design.Let us know when its finished. |
