Hello, my problem is kind of the same as many people here, but I read many posts and none of them solve my problem. I have not read them all though. I chatted with Aprelium and he suggested me to post my problem here, so here I go.
To begin with, I'm new in networking, so I might miss a few info. If you guys need anything else, ask me please, sorry in advance.
I don't have a real web site, the only thing I wanted to do is to test the server and get something running. . SO I created a simple page named index.html and placed it in htdocs, (I have read the server documentation). I have a Bellsouth modem, I don't have a router. I registered my domain with Dyndns.com and use the custum DNS service to work around port 80. The Abyss server seems to be running in port 8000 (- Default host on port 8000 is up and running (Local URL http://127.0.0.1:8000)
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999)
I also have a client that updates my IP address every time my IPS changes it (DynDNS Updater). I am almost sure I have set it up right. They have a sample in the knowledge database and my settings looks like it.
ALso I have checked and they do have my real IP address and the DynDNS Updater is working right.
SO, when I typed http://myIPAddress:8000 I get nothing
My domain is www.janierdavila.com , just in case. When I type my domain I see at the bottom of the browser that the DNS server got everything right, but I can't just see my page. AH! Of course, I can see the page locally.
Well, I don't know what else do you need. I'd appreciate all kind of help. Thanks in advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR ! |

Well, I can't connect to it. (I.E. I can't connect to www2.whatever.)
What networking devices do you have? Are you on a lan? Are you connecting through a firewall or router?
If it gave you an errorless, blank page, it sounds to me like a router or firewall with a web server running on it which ignores outside requests. (Or in this case inside with an non-local IP.)
Basically, sounds to me like you need to foreward a port or something. _________________

Hmm.. If you have a router did you port foward? Also you made your domain foward to the wrong address, you want it to foward to http://your-ip:8080 not ww2.janierdavila.com:8080. _________________ Compu-Geek.org coming back soon |

What's to say that ww2.janierdavila.com doesn't resolve to his IP? _________________

Umm... my bad, I forgot that a resolved IP would work the same as a normal IP _________________ Compu-Geek.org coming back soon |

Hi and thanks to all of you. First, I don't use a router, unless a modem is also called a router, which I don't know. And the www2.janierdavila.com is the address that resulted from the port redirection thing. And there I followed step by step the DynDNS.com tutorial, I don't think the problem is there, not sure though.
Therefore, since I don't have a router, where else I need to do the port redirection?
And answering to MonkeyNation, I'll try to supply as much info as I can.
MOdem: WireSpeed Dual Connect
I have Norton Internet Security 2005 but I have disabled it and the problems continues. It does not seem to be the firewall.
Maybe, like you said, I need to forward a port or something. Again, What should I do?
Thanks guys and Happy new year! |

I seem to remember that some of the Westell modems are actually a router/modem combined - I think it's come up here before.
What is the exact output when you open a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd if you're on 2K/XP) and type "ipconfig /all" (minus the quotes) ?
The important lines in solving this are :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : x.x.x.x
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : x.x.x.x
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : x.x.x.x
If your IP address is local and the default gateway address is also local, but different to your IP, it's pretty certain your modem is also acting as a router. _________________

Now, I don't know whether those IP address are local or no. Can you figure out any solution from this info?
Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR |

Yes, that is a local IP.
What happens if you go to 192.168.1.254 in your browser?
You should get a setup screen for your modem. If you do,
click on this link to help you set up your port-forwarding...

EDIT - I was able to see your site yesterday, but I'm getting a timed-out now. ;) |

192.168.1.254 | Yeah your router/modem Ip address is 192.168.1.254, and your local IP is 192.68.1.97. Moxxnixx Is right. Just type 192.168.1.254 or launchmodem in to yor browser and see if the config page comes up. But follow the link Moxxnixx gave you.

Hello
Thanks Moxxnixx and Computer-Pro for the link and opinions.
Now I realize that my modem is actually a router. That link is great but I think I missunderstand it little. I have fooled around tweaking the NAT configuaration and I have gotten nothing so far. I have also tried to tweak the IP configuration and nothing. But a question to Moxxnixx: Did you get to see my site yesterday?
Because maybe in some of those tweaking and configuring I got it right once but just didn't notice. Now I'll post the config I used for NAT in my router just in case someone has the same router and can supply additional info:
Service Details
Service Name *DNS
Type: Port Forwarding
Port 1
Protocol: TCP
Global Port(s): 1-10
Base Host Port: 8000
I followed an example from the link you gave me http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7074 and there they did something similar.
Thank you again guys and I wish you the best for yourself and your family in the year ahead |

Hmm. You enabled the service, You selected the correct computer and you set the base port to 8080. I maybe it's not your modem/router.
EDIT- It works now: http://www.janierdavila.com/ _________________ Compu-Geek.org coming back soon |
