I have Belkin 4-port cable/dsl router - model # F5D5231-4
Cable modem - Toshiba PCX2500
ISP Time Warner Cable (Roadrunner)

I used to have it working at another IP but have moved since then.
I just cannot seem to access my Abyss Server from an outside source????
I have tried several different ports on the "virtual server" option on my router. Currently it's on 80. If there is anymore info I have failed to mention please let me know.
THE FAMOUS "TIMED OUT" IS HAUNTING ME.
COULD SOMEONE HELP?

The port for the port forwarding is not the problem, its the IP address that it is being directed to. Find out your LAN IP by going to Start, Run, type "ipconfig" (no quotes) and look for the IP Address. Change the existing one in your router for this one and apply the settings. It should then work.

Thanks for replying. Hmmm when I type ipconfig my MS-DOS window pops up quickly and then dissappears. If I type cmd then ipconfig then it gives me data.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin
IP Addressl.............................. : 192.168.2.74
Subnet Mask............................ : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway.......................: 192.168.2.1

But none of these are my real IP that I use to access Aprelium server...
I use the one that my router uses. 192.168.2.74 is my computer that I am trying to use ( XP ). I type... http://68.XXX.XXX.XX/ or http://68.XXX.XXX.XX:80/ and nothing happens...

Generally proxy's give the IP 6x.xx.xx.xx so that IP is most likely a proxy IP. What you need to do is put the IP 192.168.2.74 into the port forwarding on your router and allow it to forward port 80.

To get your real IP, look in your routers status page for WAN IP or IP Address.

... and baby's are brought by storks. Where the hell do you get this FUD? A proxy IP will be in the block IP's owned by an ISP. If your ISP owns something in the 6x. range obviously it will be 6x, otherwise there is absolutely no reason to spout this at all.

At your previous address, were you using the router *and* cable modem, or just the cable modem?

Could you definitely access your website using the internet IP and not just the LAN IP?

If the answer to both questions is yes, I'd start fresh on a completely different high numbered port and assume that Roadrunner block port 80 in your area.

Have you applied XP SP2 since you last ran a server? The firewall is now enabled by default and would need a custom rule to allow external access to the server unless you have already disabled it.

Can you confirm that in your virtual server option, you have it set up to forward port X to 192.168.2.74 ?

Well my ISP goes through a proxy, my IP is 82.9.139.xx but my IP on websites I visit is logged as 6x.xx.xx.xx. Work that one out.

NTL owns a large block of 82.x IPs for cable customers, and a large block of 62.x IPs which it uses for it's proxies and other services.

You'll notice that your hostname is blah.ntl.com and the proxies are blah.ntli.net

I have entered in the 192.168.2.74 in my virtual server with the port 80 along with higher ports 1024 and 8080 (I also changed it in aprelium). It still does not work. I am not sure what you guys are argueing about but I know that i have an IP (which is my location) 68.XX.XX.XX, and then my router assigns a number 192.168.2.74. My problem still remains. You know what has been happening since I have tried entering info in my router page... (192.168.2.1)... when I type that in my browser it times out.... I am one step away from buying a new router.. what do you guys think?

Anonymouse, I had the modem and the router at the other address and when I typed 24.xx.xx.xx:8080 it would work (24.xx.xx.xx being the ISP issued IP to my location). I would rather fix this then buy a new router. Any other ideas?

I unhooked my router and just hooked my modem to my computer and it still won't work. I cannot access Abyss Web Server. Can someone give me some trouble shooting tips. I give up on servers for months at a time because I spend months spinning my wheels.

This is what I do. I change the port in the Abyss console to 8080
Then without the router... I type in my http://IPADDRESS:8080
I use "anonomyous web surfing by Proxyweb.net" to check if my folder of htdocs or my two like html document will pop up (index.html)
Then it says error fetching document...... %*%*

Sounds like your new router doesn't support loopback (accessing servers on your LAN via your WAN IP) - you can work around this, but not fix it.

When you switch over to modem only, where are you getting the IP you are trying to use to connect to your server? Are you still using the same IP your router was displaying? You may find this changed when you connected the modem only.

I would recommend using a non standard port - ie not 80, 8080, 3028 etc for testing. Pick one at random - 39218, whatever.

Are you sure you are changing the port Abyss should be running on and not the port that the Abyss console is running on?

I'd recommend using Netmonitor to check if the server is working, rather than any anonymous proxy service, as these can be unreliable.

OK...
I have had the same router the whole time. I am aware it does not support loop back to access it from my LAN.
Your correct... I did get a different IP when connecting the modem to the computer. I did try to use that IP when accessing the server.
I tried a non standard port like 8081... and i was positively sure that I changed it in my router (when it was connected) as well as in the Abyss command center.
Thanks for the netmonitor site its alot better then the one I was using.
Any other ideas... It seems like my computer needs to fart out whatever is blocking access to my IP Address.

I spent about 4 hours Saturday night with TRUSTpunk troubleshooting. I cannot get access to my webserver from an outside source. I built a new PC this weekend and am installing XP on it tonight to try this again!

A new pc will not solve the problem. It is obviously your ISP or router that is to fault.

In some of the troubleshooting that we did included:
Bypassing the router.
Contacting the ISP.
Selecting a new IP.
Reconfiguring and then turning off XP firewall.
I tried again all day Sunday and got through once, Using that netmonitor on port 9002. Then never again. I recall the steps before that.
Using Active Ports I termindated the port Abyss was using. Then restarted Abyss through the console. Then tried net montior and I finally saw the html code from the default aprelium page.
I have tried to repeat those steps and it will not go through

With your new PC and fresh install, dont install any firewalls, just install abyss. Try the steps you followed with trustpunk and see if it works again.

It may just be that your ISP blocks all incoming access on all ports, although I've never heard of this happening before.

Thanks for the advice. I talked three different managers at Time Warner Roadrunner. They swear up and down that there are no restrictions. I also used to have it up and running at a different address using the same ISP. I posted a long time ago when I was having trouble with VNC (remote access) accessing my computer. There was no explaination of VNC freezing about a minute after a session, it would also freeze my modem. I battled this for a few months before giving up and using PC Anywhere. I truely believe that something got messed up when trying to use VNC to access my web server time and time again.
