Make sure you've bought the exact type of RAM you need - DDR not DDR2, check the speed (PC2100/2700/3200/4000) etc. You generally can't mix speeds - although you'd expect everything to just operate at the rate of the lowest speed stick, it generally just dies horribly instead.

Try just 1 stick of 512, none of the others installed. If the PC won't boot, it should give some kind of error beep.

What RAM did you purchase (exact name/spec) & what is the motherboard included in your emachines PC?

Did you purchase the correct speed of RAM? If not this could be the problem.

Try putting the old RAM back in and see if it works. If so, then its either a memory fault, the motherboard doesnt support it or it needs reconfiguring.

Try one module at a time and see if that works.

The last option you should only try if you know what you are doing. Reset the BIOS and it might detect the RAM itself. This is something that should only be done if you know how. Dont try if you dont. You might do more damage than good!

Amie,

Sometimes even if the memory speed is correct, the ship could not work with a computer. This is usually related to a memory density problem. For example the computer does not accept a 512 MB RAM module made of 2 chips but can support a 512 MB RAM module made of 4 chips. This problem is often experienced with laptops.

Amie,

By te way, we recommend having a look on http://www.crucial.com/ . They have an extensive database of memory extensions and if they work/do not work with a given type of computers.

A search for Emachine gives the following tables: http://www.crucial.com/search/srchrslt.asp?type=All&ANDOR=AND&rowcount=20&cv=Crucial&keywords=emachine&submit=Go .
Notice the exact specification of the required memory type (CL, parity, voltage, density). If your new memory does not match these, it is likely that it will fail to work.
