UPS Battery Backup

Hello,

I am going to get a UPS Battery Backup unit for my server when I get it set up but I was wondering which one to get, I saw this one on eBuyer, it looks OK and should do the job.

Its only £19.99 GBP and it seems a bit cheap compared to the others.

What do you guys, think?

You need to look at what you have in your server to decide UPS to go for. Compare the vA rating for that UPS to the other more expensive ones...

If you have a low powered server with a small number of HD's, a cheap and cheerful UPS will do the trick. If you have a hardcore server with high powered processor, a number of drives and a large PSU, you're going to find that cheap and cheerful PSU gives you about 2 minutes of backup before dying horribly.

Use the UPS selector on the APC site to help you get some idea of your power requirements.

I wouldn't recommend $20 for an UPS , I have one that lasts 30 to 45 minutes
which will cost you about $59 but its worth having the server on for a few extra
minutes. You shouldn't buy something that only gives you 15 minutes.

Note: Keep in mind that the power can go out for up to an hour sometimes and
having 15 minutes isn't really a good UPS. UPS aren't cheap but they are useful.

Before you chose the UPS you want to look at your conditions. For example in Swindon, UK it is very unusual for a power faller, or even a quick power blip (no power for about a second). So a UPS that could do only 5 mins is adequate for me. The last power cut here was in about '98, and only for about 2 hours. It's not really worth the money for one that can last that long, for me at least.

OK, thanks for the feedback. The server I will be running is a 1.3GHz AMD Duron, 512MB RAM, No graphics card (I use onboard), onboard LAN, 350W power supply (but remember it only takes what it needs) and one 30gb hard drive which switches off after 10 minutes of idle.

I live in the UK myself so as olly86 said, blackouts are rare, but my Dad is still doing work on the house and sometimes needs some of the electricity off, he has already switched it off on me twice by accident so it could be useful.

As its going to be a professional webserver (professional for me :P) I need the maximum uptime I can get.

The UPS I looked at was 650VA so it should do the biz for 15+ minutes. Remember its a stand alone computer with no monitor switched on.
