|
|
I've tried everything I know, read all I can and still can't connect!
I have Abyss running on my computer with Kerio personal firewall and a Sipura 2100 (a VoIP Telephone Adapter with a built-in router). I've configured Abyss to use port 1027 just in case my IP is blocking 80.
Without the Sipura TA everything works fine so there's some setting in the Sipura I'm missing.
Under Port Forwarding, I have a setting containing:
Enable : Yes
Service Name: Abyss
Starting Port : 1027
Ending Port: 1027
Protocol: Both (TCP and UDP)
Server IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Please see picture in http://www.davelissa.us/Sipura.jpg
I found my IP address from IPchicken.com and typed <ipaddress:1027> and I can't connect.
What am I missing here?
Sorry if this keeps coming up again and again, but this newbie would greatly appreciate help!
Regards,
Dave
PS: After enabling the port, I get messenger spam, so SOMEONE is able to connect to me!! This is positively galling! |

Congratulations on doing your homework!
A few points...
Your port forwarding setup looks fine - assuming you've verified that the LAN IP of your server is definitely 192.168.0.2.

If you are literally typing <ipaddress:nonstandardport> not http://<ipaddress:nonstandardport> and you are using Internet Explorer, you will have problems - IE does not cope well unless you specify the protocol being used on a non standard port. Other browsers try http by default.

Good idea, bad choice of port. Ports 1026 through 1030ish are generally used by the Windows Messenger service - this also explains why you get Messenger spam once your port forwarding is set up.
Does your server actually work if you use http://lanip:1027 ? I'd have expected the Messenger service to stop Abyss running properly if it is already listening although now I think about it, I think it's actually a UDP protocol, so maybe not. Even if you did get the server running on 1027, you would see a lot of background traffic from people sweeping IP ranges looking for open Messenger services to spam... I'd suggest changing the port.
Finally, one point a lot of people miss is the problem of routers that do not support loopback - this means connecting from a machine on the LAN side of the router to the router's WAN IP. If this is the case, you will see timeouts/errors whatever port you use - this does not stop people *outside* your LAN being able to view your site perfectly, it just means that to access it yourself, you must use your LAN IP.
So, my suggestion is first change the port to a higher number that is definitely unused - pick something random in the 4000 range and you should be OK. Reset your forwarding to this, and try again. You only need to forward TCP btw.
If you still can't access it by your WAN IP after changing port, I'd assume that the forwarding is working, but you have the loopback problem.
Use this site http://www.netmonitor.org/tools/test.php?type=www to check whether your server is accessible from outside the LAN, or just get a friend to check for you. If you use the netmonitor link, make sure you put the correct port in the form. |

Thanks a million, "AnonyMoose"; you show great insite and patience. May you live long and have lots of children (assuming that you actually want some). You won't believe how long I've been struggling with this!
The Netmonitor picked up a test website that I've made in my hard drive and showed the raw HTML code - so I think it's ok now. You're right...it's a loopback problem. My Sipura is a Telephone Adapter (for VoIP), not a real router; it's firewall capability doesn't even include stealth. I guess it's pretty rudimentary. I'm now actively kicking myself....
I've set up a web domain forward to access the Abyss site. I don't have a static IP, but I rarely shut down the cable connection, and if I do, I can easily change the forwarding address if the IP changes.

Good thinking. Curiously, Abyss works when it's opened from the startup, but not as a windoze service. I guess it's a conflict of interest for it.
I'm having some problems with FTP, but I'm experimenting as we speak....type.
Anyhow, I'm a happy camper right now!
Thanks again,
Dave |
