Yea, i am trying to host some files on my server/computer so my brother can download them and see some pictures of his niece. I downloaded the Abyss software, and installed it. It says my server is running. Now from the tutorials, i have to use an html program to make my website.. then after that, where do i put the html files that i just made. I try to look at my blank site but my computer says cannot find server. Sorry for the basic questions, im really new at this. Is there a realy basic tutorial on this site? |

Put the files you make in the htdocs folder which is inside the folder where you installed Abyss, usually C:\Program Files\Abyss Webserver\htdocs
However, there is already a test page in there - if you cannot view this while the server is running, you have run into problems already.
Do you have a software firewall installed?
Are you using Windows XP SP2?
Have you checked in Internet Explorer that you are not using a proxy server?
The best tutorial for getting started is reading the documentation carefully...

Yes im using xp service pack 2. thats the only firewall that i have right now. to look at my 'site' i just look at my ip address and server port..
well i opened up the help and support icon on the consol and it told me my ip address
66.157.239.155
and i using port 1002
but i double clicked the globe on the system tray and it says
Abyss Web Server X1 (v 1.2.3.0)
Copyright © Aprelium Technologies - 2001-2004
Web server local URL: http://127.0.0.1/
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999/
Web server local URL: http://127.0.0.1/
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:10002/
so what is my actual site going to be?
i am reading the tutorial, so please bear with me. thanks
edit, i do see a test page, and it says abyss server is already running on this computer |

SpoonyGSR, welcome to the forums.
Look at http://www.aprelium.com/ip to see your correct IP.
Only YOU can use http://127.0.0.1 to see your site. This is your localhost IP.
If anyone types http://127.0.0.1 in thier browser, they would see thier own site.
To configure the XP firewall to allow access to the server, go to the firewall dialog
window and click the exceptions tab. Then, checkmark the Abyss program.
If it's not on the list, click the Add Program button and add it.
Glad to see another Jacksonville resident on the forums.(I'm from Jax Bch) |

If you are using Windows XP, configure the integrated firewall to allow incoming traffic on the web port:
Open the Windows Control Panel,
Select the Networking section and open the properties of your network interface,
Select the Advanced tab and press the Parameters button in the bottom of the panel.
A dialog where you can allow incoming connection to some ports is displayed. If Abyss Web Server uses port 80, check the Web Server (HTTP) line. If it uses another port, press Add... and enter this port number. Select TCP, fill the other parameters according to the displayed descriptions, and validate
This is the part thats screwy, its the only problem im having... im not on port 80 anymore, these instructions, dont tell me where to go, i have been searching for hours looking for the place where i change the ports and all the stuff written aboe, im sure its right under my nose, but everything else is going good, i taught myself the basics of HTML and its pretty dang easy. i also put that into ht docs folder adn i check my virtual port and it showed up, now jsut for other people to see it.
please im sorry for the stupid question, but after i get this ill be good. thanks |

Abyss automatically configures to use port 80. All you have to do is install abyss and get your ip (http://www.aprelium.com/ip).
From your browser run http://your_ip_number, and you should see your start page.
If you are behind windows firewall it will ask you if you want to grant Abyss to use Internet connection.
If you’re behind a network. You have to set your router to point to your computer as a web server.
I hope that helps…
whats your ip so we can tell you if we see your page...

In your previous post you said that your using ip 66.157.239.155 and port 1002, thats your consol port not your websites port, a computer is automaticly set to transfer data to www. on port 80 if you don't set it otherwise...the only thing that i can think of that your on the LAN (your sharing your internet connection with more than one computer in your house), yes? If so then you need to set your router to point to your computer as a web host....
Im also using XP Pro SP2 and I just installed my abyss and works great without any problems....
other thing, did you try shuting your windows firewall down, check if that helps...if that helps then you'll know it's the firewall that is making all this trouble!!!
EDIT: go to your abyss cosole and click on Server Configuration and you'll see Sever Root which is where you installed your abyss and where your htdocs folder is..also you'll see Documents Path thats name of your folder where you store your files within your Document Path, also youll see port and it should say 80, if not change it to say 80,
good luck, hope that helps...

sorry to butt in here, i am finding this thread really helpful.
i have tried numerous ip searches all giving different ip's
i am very confused.
i used
http://www.aprelium.com/ip/
and it gave me
62.252.0.8.
so i tried
http://62.252.0.8.:80
is this not correct ? |

You don't need to specify port 80 as in http://yourip:80, as 80 is the default port for server. You only need to explicitly type in port number if it's not 80. |
