Installing Abyss as a service?

Hi all,

I have been using Abyss for a few weeks now and have been impressed to the point that I think I may have to make a donation!!!!

I do have one issue though, I have just suffered a power out here for two hours. When the server comes back on line, FTP and Mail services start up even though the server is sitting at the user login screen, but Abyss will not run until the user logs in.

So is there a way I can either disable the XP Home SP2 login screen so the server boots to desktop, or is there a way to install Abyss as a service?

Any help greatly appreciated.

The beta version does support being started as a service. Simply bring up the windows console window (not the web based one), click the server menu, then click service manager. It will then give you the option to install as a service then to start up automatically on system bootup.

Its stable (but its not guarenteed with it being a BETA) but you can download a copy. I don't know the address but I will look for it and post it here, unless someone beats me to it!

This is the only link I have but I am sure this BETA release has the service function on it.

This may also be the version that expires on the 31st Dec 04 so you may be out of luck. (I cheated and set my clock back a few days!)

I am not too keen on using the beta as they expire quickly and I need to be stable etc..

But.... I have found a way to turn off the user logon screen in XP for anyone else wanting Abyss to start without intervention.

Click the Start Button, select Run and type "control userpassword2".

Untick the tick box at the top of the window which say "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

Click Apply and then choose the user who will be logged on by default. Enter the password and confirm it, click Apply and that's it!

Hope that helps anyone else who does not want to risk the beta but needs auto start with Abyss.

You can also do this by not having a password and only one user account on the computer, using the logon screen and not the other one (windows 2000 style logon).

You were. Your suggestion keeps the accounts on the PC secure, prevents passwordless remote access and is generally sensible. The second idea leaves the PC wide open to local and remote access without a password.

It's the difference between saying "Hey, want to get into your house easier? Get a security door that opens automatically when it recognises you!" and "Hey, want to get into your house easier? Leave the front door unlocked and wide open 24/7"...
