Ok, I have been reading the forum for this question and haven't seen it so probably silly, but I am trying to buy a router but I am asked if I have an ethernet card. How do I find out? I think I do. I have a modem on broadband and thought they required one. Will that card work for a router as well? Is there away to find out on my computer what I have? I haven't a clue how to install one if I don't have one so I guess that would be a question for another time.

Now a days, many cable modems can connect via USB as well, thus negating the old reqirement for an Ethernet card (but it did used to be that way).

Anyway, what you're looking for is basically something on the back of your computer that looks like a telephone jack, but twice as wide. If you have that, it's probably an Ethernet card.

Even if you don't have one, there is still good news. The days are pretty much gone where you have to open up your computer to add anything. Paracomm makes a USB to Ethernet adapter. If your computer predates USB (why?), Xircom made a Parallel port to Ethernet (known as a Pocket Ethernet) adapter... Not that that tid bit of info helps at all (if you don't have USB, but are on cable, then you must have Ethernet card, right?). It's almost 2AM for me... :)

Anyway, as far as the router compatibility is concerned, any broadband router made today should function with any standard 10-BaseT or 10/100-TX card made in the last 7 years or so, so you should be pretty safe.

Well... good luck, and good night! I'm off to bed, hope all works out for you!
