Does anyone know of any really "rockhard" PC Firewalls? I am sorry to waste your time... _________________ InSaNiTy Is A gIfT! |

zonealarm, this comes from an ex-norton user, I tried many others but narrowed down to just one, this is based on actual performance and not quoted details from the marketing blurb. Used ZA for 7 years now with no issue.
I will say this, take the tutorial, if you dont understand something, look it up and get to understand your firewall settings and how to configure it for your needs. |

Tanks I'll try it out, seven years is a long time to not be hacked, this thing probably works well...

Zonealarm has a free version, but the paid one is THE BEST. |

I used to use Zone Alarm, but it caused me all sorts of problems. I now use Kerio.
But each to his own... _________________ Olly |

Thanks greatly for all of your suggestions, I'll be sure to try them all.
I went to zygate website and did an online port scan and they said that my port 80 was open even with zonealarm on, how do I protect my web server?

If your port 80 isn't open, you won't be able to serve a website. Full stop. Zonealarm won't make your port 80 appear closed if you have allowed Abyss to run as a server application. You can either close Abyss and have the port appear closed, or run Abyss and have it appear open. |

If my port appears open, am I still safe?

As safe as whatever is listening on the port - in this case Abyss - is. You can't be paranoid *and* run a webserver on your home PC. There's no huge mystery about firewalls, all they do is block unwanted requests - you're running a webserver and inviting requests so you should expect to leave the port open. |

There is no port on any computer that should be left completely OPEN. All ports should be filtered, closed, or cloaked. I am just wondering if my web server port is filtered or actually OPEN, as the sygate port scan suggested.

if you are running a web server, the port MUST be open for Abyss to receive requests on it.
If the port was closed, it would be detectable from outside, but no connections would be allowed. If the port port was in stealth it would be invisible it to the outside world. Both these 2 states prevent any incoming requests being responded to. _________________ Olly |

If you think that is true, you're going to need to look to external hosts for hosting. As I have stated twice now, and olly86 once, without your port OPEN you will be unable to serve webpages. Filtered simply means it is passing through your firewall, if it passes through your firewall to an open port it will appear to be - and pretty much is - open. |

the point is, the firewall will not allow invalid connections, it has a set of rules that it checks the incoming packet against, if these packets dont conform to the known and accepted formats, that packet then it gets dropped automatically.
I have run Abyss behind a stealthed PC which was set to ultra paranoid and still succesfully served up, casual probing of my port 80 revieled nothing and it was as if I was not on line.
Careful configuration of any firewall will produce similar results although when I tried McAfee's effort I had no end of problems as according to McAfee you need certain ports open to server up which is total rubbish. Easier to avoid that one. |

I have always used Kerio, combine with a NAT Router.
All the ports have been stealth bar, port 80. cos if you stealth this port Abyss cannot receive browser requests. _________________ Olly |

Tanks for all of your time and suggestions, I really appreciate it. It isn't much but you can check my site out at either
http://www.psychopathicchild.tk/
or
http://www.stampbunnies.servebeer.com/...
These are both the same site but I cannot access dot.tk with road runner for some reason so I had to switch to no-ip's service.

I have the same, exact, configuration. Great minds think alike...
Just my 2 cents' worth...

But is a real pig to setup. I gave up with it as I couldn't find any drivers for my network card :( All the other old hardware had drivers just the network card. _________________ Olly |

I would hardly call Linux on its own protection anyway... _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
