I've looked all over the forums for a fix or a simlilar problem, but this forum is huge and there is just no way I can search every single post.

Problem: The server stops serving my webpage.

What I know:

1. I know that all of my networking is done fine. I have Sprint DSL. The way I have it connected is:

DSL modem (bridged) ---> Linksys (BEFW11S4 Wireless AP/Router) ---> My computer (no others on the network)

2. I have the port forwarding set to use 8080 both on my router and in Abyss. (I also have remote access to the router turned off, which when turned on uses port 80 by default.)

3. I am registered with DynDNS and use the DeeEnEs client to update my IP. Although when the server apparently stops serving pages my ip hasn't changed. (If anyone can suggest a diff client please do; don't give my the dyndns list as I have already seen that, just want recommendations on what you have personally used)

4. What I have found is if I completely halt the server then exit out of Abyss and re-run the program it fixes everything. So I'm not sure what the problem is. My guess is it is some sort of error within Abyss or maybe my html? All I use is HTML and CSS and its all checked by W3C.

5. I check my site regularly by leaving AIM open and having a link in my profile. I use my dyndns information
[ http://spoofed.gotdns.org:8080 ](which is how I have the link set within aim)
Thanks for any help. I've tried to be as detailed as I can so there is no confusion.

One last note: I use XP Pro, but even if IIS starts up remember that I use port 8080 and not 80.

Hello techman21--

Is there a crash report that accompanies this phenomena? This would be in crashrep.txt.

Axis

I don't see that anywhere. I looked through all my abyss folders and did not see it. Would it be stored somewhere else?
I did see a cgi.log that said "The system cannot find the path specified." ...But I think I can figure that particular problem out.
I just would like to leave this on and not have to worry about it not working when I want to upload stuff while at work or anywhere else for that matter.
Thanks for the input though :)

Hello techman21--

It should be in your root abyss folder, i.e., one level up from your logs folder.

Nope, no crash file. I don't think Abyss actually crashed, but it seems like it does because everything else is set correctly but I'm unable to bring up the page. And when I restart the server ie: I choose "stop" then choose "start" the webpage still does not load. But once I stop the server and exit out of Abyss, then re-open abyss ( I go to start --> then click on the exe for Abyss) it works again like normal.

I have looked through every folder within the Abyss install directory and have not found the crash log. I assume I do not see one because Abyss does not really crash. Could this be some sort of error between Windows XP and Abyss?
If I'm being unclear about anything please let me know and I'll explain in more detail if that needs to be done.

Once again thanks for input Axis :)

Hi again techman21--

Hmmm...I am using the newest beta, but the last time I was using the standard version Abyss automatically created a crashrep.txt .

Perhaps this is not generated anymore in the standard, free release?

Can someone chime in here and clear this up? Does not the latest, stable version of Abyss generate a crashrep.txt ?

Should I use the beta instead? From past experience with other programs/games I always thought that using the stable release was a good idea even if the betas do fix some other issues (as they bring newer issues up). I avoid comparing Abyss to any MS product, but do realize this does happen. I know we run older versions of the mail server at work (as we normally see a bunch of peopel have issues when they first upgrade to the latest release).

I'm willing to try the beta if the solves the problem. :)

Hi again ;-)

No, I don't think this has to do with it being the beta version or not. I just connected to your site easily and fast.

So, your server is working fine at the moment. Let's wait and see if anyone can tell us if crashrep.txt is still generated automatically (or when there is a crash) with Abyss stable version. Because this is what would tell us if it was a network issue (and not an Abyss issue), etc. If your server didn't crash, then it is just something else. (there are so many things that can bug out in serving web pages that have nothing to do with Abyss)

I am confused about this. :-)

Well I finally figured out what was causing the problem. My DSL went down earlier today and when I got home I restarted the server, but when I tried to access the page it would not come up.

Then I got the idea to check the IP address (from my router) to make sure it matched the one that DynDNS had. Apparently my stupid DNS forwarder did not update the DynDNS account I have.

Does anyone have a better suggestion than using DeeEnEs as a IP updater? I use windows so it would need to be a windows based program, and be free! If it includes the option to run as an NT service that is even better.

Hi techman21--

Your problem sounds so similar to ones I used to have that I have to wonder if it is possible that the same thing is going on.

When I first started serving with Abyss I noticed that my WAN connection would stumble and fall at regular intervals. After watching this awhile, I discovered that they were occurring at regular 12 hr. intervals. I concluded that this, perhaps, was something happening purposely by my ISP for some reason or another.

I noticed a similar issue in getting my dns redirect to resolve correctly until I rebooted...sometimes a couple of times. (I am using no-ip.com)

My solution was to run a shutdown.exe from task scheduler every 12 hrs. which, in effect, reboots my system, including Abyss, twice a day. Since starting this approach, I have had absolutely no problems with keeping my server online, except for the occasional gremlin or two and the 2-3 minutes it take my server to reboot twice a day.

Ok, I know this is a long shot...there are many other things that could be involved. But I mention all this just in case it might be the long shot that proves true... :-)

Regards,
Axis
