|

Hi, erm, this question is not directly about abyss.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a way i could access my home pc (which is running abyss webserver) on my office pc? I was hoping to be able to do that so i can retrieve data from it.
I've read something about VPN (Virtual Private Networks) and i'm wondering if thats the thing i've been looking for? Also, could there be any useful php/asp/cgi scripts around that allows me to access the entire contents of my pc remotely? Or are there any commercial/open source alternatives in doing so?
I understand that this involves much about security, but i think it would be useful for me to have this function.
Thanks for listening, sorry for such a long post. :) |

And remember to set a password! Don't want people sneaking in there... _________________ Bienvenidos! |

VNC and a password is not a secure solution. Your VNC session is unencrypted across the internet. I'd only use unencrypted VNC across a private LAN. Use VNC and an SSH tunnel, or a VNC version that supports encryption. |

Phyber Optik,
If you want to only upload and download files from your home PC, you can install a filemanager script (such as Web File Browser from http://www.webfilebrowser.org) on Abyss. _________________ Support Team

Thanks all for the suggesions, much appreciated. :)
ok, i've tried realvnc and it seems to work exactly like PC Anywhere from Norton. I can get it to work thru my LAN no problem, but can't seem to get it on the internet. need to put in my ip addy? well, i put in my ip which is dynamic btw but it still can't work thru net. Must be something i missed? :?
Haven tried that webfilebrowser tho. But I've got another one which is called PHP Advanced Transfer Manager by Bugada Andrea. It works well enuff, but limited to a single directory where the script resides i think.
It would be a useful function to addon to future revisions of Abyss don't you think? I mean, most home users would also appreciate if they could access their home PCs at their office while running Abyss concurrently. It could pose a major security issue but hey, i think you guys at Aprelium should have no probs man.
Once again, thanks for producing such a easy webserver to use.
Cheers~ |

You need to forward port 5900 in your router for RealVNC to work across the internet. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Well the first thing that came to my mind (if you are talking about JUST transfering files) was FTP. Get something like GuildFTPD(my prefference). IF you want to remote control your pc from another one I reccomend SSH. I do not presonaly have any experienc with it but I was going through something similar with my pc a while ago and i went with GuildFTPD but all my friends and collegues reccomended SSH which you can get from www.openssh.org, its free :D .
Hope it helped! If you need me to help you with anything just email me(email can be found in my profile)and I will help you in any way I can. |
