|
|
Hello Comrades.
First off, I want to say a thank you to Aprelium in general for writing and offering such an easy to use and effective Web Server. In 10 minutes I managed to set up my web site running on a P1 166Mhz. What could be better?
Right. My question is simple; is it possible to save the Access Statistics readout on the console (the one that shows the number of hits, of HTML hits, data transfered, uptime, etc.) as a text file on the harddisc? I know that there is a general log saved, which saves the record of each connection's IP and activity, but it doesn't show the concise easy set of information that the Access Stats show.
Failing that, are there any other logs that the server generates. I want the logs cos my server is on an old comp which normally sits in the corner of my room with no monitors or mouse or keyboard, so I want to be able to check the logs remoted over our house LAN.
Thank you to anyone can help. |

That is just the thing. Thanks. That and the Remote Desktop Connection of Windows XP are just what I want. |

Yes, I suggest using RealVNC instead of Windows Desktop Connection. RealVNC does not use NetBIOS, unline WDC. NetBIOS quite possibly the most dangerous port on the internet (and easy to exploit). _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Microsoft Remote Desktop doesn't use netbios. It runs on port 3389 by default. Leaving a VNC server directly accessible to the net without some form of VPN software or encrypted tunnel is just as dangerous. |

Are you sure about that Anonymoose? I have heard it does from two seperate sources:
1) I know myself, because when I was trying to see what port it connected on, I used it, and then I found it was on 137.
2) I heard on a TV Show (The Screen Savers) Kevin Rose (who is a host) say that Remote Desktop Connection operated at port 137. Since The Screen Savers is quite a popular show, I think the chances of them saying something incorrect is fairly slim.
If you have VNC open, yes that can be very insecure. However, NetBIOS is not only open to attacks from Remote Desktop Connection, there are also hundreds of exploits to get your HD root, open shares, et cetera that would be a lot harder with just VNC. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

iNaNimAtE is correct. It runs in port 137 (I just enabled it and port scanned my other computer). There is another alternative to Web Log Expert. You should take a look at AWStats. Its a perl script that does the same thing (with a few more features). You can access it from any web browser too. Saves the need to remotely connect to your server. Theres one downside, its not that easy to install and configure. If your interested in it and need help installing it let me know. _________________ http://jmoschetti45.com |

Better tell MS that...
Frequently Asked Questions About Remote Desktop
Q. What port does Remote Desktop use? Does everything go over port 3389?
A. Port 3389 is the only port you need to open. Sound will attempt to be streamed through User Datagram Protocol (UDP) first. If no port is available for UDP, sound will stream through a virtual channel in Remote Desktop Protocol, which uses port 3389.

Interesting. It worked. Now I'm really confused. Because altough it changed, that doesn't change the fact that I had an active connection on port 137 when I used Remote Desktop before; (and not to mention the TV Show I saw)...
There were no open shares or anything, and I wasn't browsing the network, so I don't know what it could have been. Oh well, when it comes to Microsoft, I am forever confused. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Im confused too. I checked everything and can't seem to find anything running on port 137. Im just going to block it. It better not be a trojan. _________________ http://jmoschetti45.com |

Oh yes, definitely. Regardless of what is running, block port 137.
