|

I can't access my local pages (http://127.0.0.1/index.html etc) WITHOUT going online first.
But the reason I'm doing this is to test my php code etc. BEFORE uploading to my web site proper - modem dial up where I am is too expensive to spend many hours online developing.
I suspect Abyss is working fine, and it'smy WinXp/IE6 setup that is insisting on dialling up whenever I try to access a web page.
Can anyone offer any tips? Obviously, I do want the system to dial up when I try and access a non-local web page.
Cheers
p.s. Setting up Abyss and hooking in PHP support, aliases and everything else was an absolute doddle compared to trying to get Apache running. Well done the Abyss team.

Obviously Abyss is intended to work when you are online. Although it sounds wierd you can't access local pages while you're not online, I think the only plausable excuse would be due to the nature of a webserver.
Try checking your settings in IE. Also, download Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) and see if it works with that. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

penumbra,
Abyss will work locally without requiring to be online. The problem comes from your IE settings.
In IE, open the menu Tools > Internet Options > Connections and select "Dial Whenever a network connection is not present". Press in the same tab "LAN settings" and if "Use a proxy" is checked, check also "Bypass the proxy for local addresses".
This should solve the problem. Otherwise, use Opera or Mozilla. _________________ Support Team

I was looking around those settings, but I couldn't think of how they would be of any help. If you hit "Bypass proxy for local addresses," don't you need to use a proxy server for it to bypass? _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Why do you have to add inane misinformed comments to every thread :(

There is absolutely no reason why you can't use Abyss offline, even on a machine that is not connected to the internet or a LAN just for local testing purposes. If the PC is trying to dial everytime you use local pages, it's just a case of telling IE not to dial - as Aprelium said! If the Dial Whenever A Network Connection etc option doesn't work, use Never Dial A Connection. Outlook etc will still prompt you to dial up when you click send/receive, but you will need to manually dial before using IE.
Some ISPs will use a proxy for caching. In older versions of Windows the proxy setting was shared with the connection settings, in the new versions the proxy is set separately for dial up connections so the option would be irrelevant. |

First of all, the use of a hyperbole is unnecessary. I have gotten at least five personal messages from people saying that I have helped them greatly; so apparently everything I have to say isn't useless.
I mentioned "Although it sounds wierd you can't access local pages while you're not online..." which was intended to imply that there was probably a reason Abyss was not working (besides "its nature").
It is not fair to only quote what you want to criticize, because right after the paragraph you mentioned, I said "Try checking your settings in IE. Also, download Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) and see if it works with that."
You also have your time a little messed up, because saying "...of telling IE not to dial - as Aprelium said!" would imply that my post came after Aprelium's comment; which it did not. I do not need Aprelium's comment repeated to me; I am able to read just fine.
As for my "inane misinformed comments," I think you find a lot more irrelevant on this forum than the ones I have made.

Those are just a couple posts that don't apply to your standards. If you start looking for "irrelevant comments," you will find a lot more. I don't think any one else really cares about what people say on these forums; as long as it isn't irreverent. _________________ Bienvenidos! |
