of couse you can use MySQL :D
Just download a windows install from http://mysql.com
install mysql and navigate to the directory you installed it in.
There should be a file named mysqladmin or winsqladmin something along those lines. Open it to start mysql and that is it you don't have to change anything on your server just make sure MySQL is running on your task bar meaning mysql is on.
btw you can use localhost as the mysql database path for scripts :) |

I am sorry I am really not sure because I don't know much about mySql but what I meant was in some php scripts it asks you for the path to your mysql. You would enter localhost here since it is running on the same machine. I don't think people can see the path because PHP gets compiled on your computer and the data and everything is sent back to the user with no PHP coding in it thus hiding your path :) |

Yes, running a web server on your computer doesn't prevent it from being accessible from the outside world. The name localhost is just a shortcut to reference the computer you run on.
