Cant Open Database

Firstly let me say I have only had abyss and php for 48 hours and am loving it. I'ts been a while since I've found myself getting out of bed at 5:30am because a problem is bugging me so much I cant sleep. I have installed mysql and php, everything seems to be working ok. I can establish a connection from a php script to mysql, but when I try to open my newly created database, I get an error 200. I know the database is there because from the mysql command line if I use >show datbases and >show tables they show up. Any light on the subject would be most appreciated. Im already going bald, so can't really afford to lose any more hair !!!!!!!!!!!
