Is it possible to run a server without my isp knowing? they say no servers but I really need one. I don't care if it is viewable to others, it is only my php testing server, so it doesn't even have to be online. |

I read once some ISPs do not allow their users to run personal or commercial servers so I checked my ISPs T.O.S. Sure enough they mentioned it along with a ban on port 80...
I found a competitor in the neighborhood which would allow me to run a server of my choosing so I told my ISP... They said they mention it in their T.O.S. because if everyone did it, it could hurt the service *but* they do not really mind or will come after me *as long* as I do not abuse it...
Tell your ISP and see what they say... Also, if its just for internal testing then always use localhost or 127.0.0.1 to access your work... Use a firewall or something similar to block access to your global IP from the outside. If you need to use your global IP I wouldn't worry much about it as long as you do not abuse the system by uploading 100 to 600 megabyte files on your site for others to download...
Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

I'm already running a firewall. I had a server before I saw their TOS and they did not know. I asked them if I could run a server and they said no.
I looked for a competitor but as far as I know they're the only cable isp in the area, I'd have to compare to dsl.
I also checked earthlink and I could compare to earthlink high speed satellite. I see nothing against servers at earthlink. |
