I'm wondering about upgrading my server ...

At the moment I have ...

Athlon XP 3000+ (2,1ghz, 512kb cache, 400 fsb), nForce 2 Ultra board, 1gb ddr400 ...

And thinking of changing to ...

Pentium IV 640 (3,2ghz, 2048kb cache, 800fsb, hyperthreading), i915 board, 1gb ddr400

How much would that improve my performance by? Good or bad idea?

( i want php and sql to be faster, for phpbb forums and stuff .... )

I run MySQL and PHP on a 200 MHz-server without any problems.

The thing that generally slows your server down, is your upload speed. So therefore upgrading your server's hardware will have little or no effect, considering that it is already fairly powerful.

Running a few phpbb forums with 70+ mods each ....

Going from a twin PIII 600 to the athlon dropped the execution time from around 1.5 sec do 0.2 sec ... but on a page that had loads of contents and pics and crap, it can raise the time upto almost 5 seconds ... I'm talking about script execution time here, not page loading time, if you see the difference, so it has nothing to do with upload (although I do accept what you're saying, but it's like this even in local). And yes, I know, if I didn't put the mods it would be faster, etc etc ... but I don't want to know if it's sensible, I want to know if I'll see any difference with the PIV?

( Does the extra cache of the PIV help these kind of things etc? )
