hi i dont mean to sound dumb but i was wondering, are there any Starter Servers that are cheap? i mean like those big Enterprise ones but made for personal use.

I ask casue i would like to free up my other computer that im useing for a Web Server,i mean would it be better to use a Actual Hardware Server like ya see in bussiness's but for Personal use? Are there any Personal Servers ya can buy that are cheap or no?

So far i see servers for bussiness's that are $700 to almost $5,000 or more,a little too rich for my blood hehe.

Hope my questions made sense and i didnt sound dumb.

Thank you for the help inadvance.

You dont need anything special to run a web server, just a 233mhz, 128mb ram and a decent sized hard drive is all you need. Just go to a computer repair shop and see if they have any going cheap.

JamesJB30,

Abyss Web Server doesn't need a lot of resources to run. So if you're only having static pages, a Pentium 1 and 64 MB of RAM can be sufficient.
If you are going to use a database and PHP/Perl, a faster processor (>200 MHz) and more RAM (>=128 MB) will make your site look faster.

Just to clarify things. A server that those IT-guys buy is a pc like you have.

The main difference is ; Its only software is the OS in its server version. It can have two processors (pentium, amd). Usually it uses SCSI HD instead of IDE HD because of better speed and ability to attach more of them.

About the cost difference ; One extra processor. SCSI HD cost more. Use of high quality (high price) components to ensure durability and minimize risk for component failure.

In my opinion i would say that the choice of network card and router/switch is essential to a good speed to/from your home server.
If it only says 10Mbps on the network card and router/switch buy yourself equipment that says 10/100 Mbps on it.
Read up on router with firewall because some cheap models doesn´t cope with heavy trafic. Avoid hubs.
