|
|
I didnt know where this thread would belong so I just made it in this one.
Ok, I was wondering if anyone in here has run a counter strike server from home? Im thinking about making on for me and my friends to play on. So what I need to know is would a cable internet connection be enough for a 12 person server?
Thanks ahead of time

You don't say what your upstream is, but if it's less than 512kbps, it's going to be horribly laggy. Also, if you play on your own server locally against others connected to you via your cable, you are going to have 0 lag to their 100-200ms - people are going to get pissed... |

... And this is the off topic discussion area. What did your wifi finder have to do with Abyss? |

no this had nothing to do with abyss webserver, thats why i put it in the off topic forum. So if i have anything under a 512kbps then it will be laggy?
I will try a upload speed test later and tell you what i got. |

Guess what, my broadband is like 15 times faster than T1. |

Yeah right, your site load REALLY slow. It took 30 sec before everything was loaded, so I guess you have like 128 kbit/s in upload, and maybe (max) 2 mbit in download. |

I thought broadband was a shared T1 o.O?....
Are you on an OC backbone?
Oh, and I run a small (6 person) server (ON DSL), and it runs fine. Its just that if I put a mod like war3, and people start joining and have to download stuff. There goes the bandwith. So I think your connection would be good enough for a small server. Just don't expect to be hosting 32 person servers, lag free.
Edit: -reads first post- Oh, better check with your broadband's TOS. In most its against the TOS to run servers.
Which version of cs are you intrested in? CS 1.6 or CSS? _________________

actually it isnt cs at all, i just said that because people are more familiar with cs, but it is a half life mod, it called Day of Defeat, or DoD. I wasnt planning on having all that stupid "monster kill" quotes from quake and stuff, just a regular, out of the box (steam actually) game. |

Oh, I've never hosted a DoD server personally, but Im sure your internet connection should be good for a few people. What I would do is experiment. Get like 3 people in, see how the lag is, then start to increase by 1 or 2 people and see what the limit is before lag is a problem. I would say on a cable broadband, about 5-6 people would probably be max. You can also set cvars that help control how much data is sent from the server, and how often its sent ect. sv_ticrate is a good one I heard, its supposed to use more CPU but its supposed to help gameplay (or so I've heard....). Also, there has been some rumors that if you run a small movie (like a movie animation, like the windows clock in a loop) in the background, itll prevent the computer from going into sleep mode. Don't know if thats true, but my CS servers run fine without it -shrugs-. _________________

You dont have to run abyss to have that no-ip name. Because the IP of your computer is going to be that no-ip name.
And yes they could just type mynoip.no-ip.com (or whateer it is) into the server favorites, and steam will do the rest. _________________
