Hi all,
Just discovered Abyss, downloaded it, and fired it up for the first time...it's terrific. One small problem I'm experiencing though, I was hoping someone might be able to help:
It works fine if I configure it to start up "at user logon." When I do that, I see the little blue whirly icon in my systray--and if I click that icon, I can do things like enter the configuration screen, etc. Perfect. But if I try to install it as a Windows service, when I reboot, I don't see the icon in the systray. How am I supposed to configure the server settings at that point? And how can I be sure it's running if there's no icon, aside from checking the task manager?
Also, I notice two "abyssws.exe" processes in the task manager, regardless of which method I use to start Abyss. Is that normal, to have two identical processes running simultaneously?
FWIW I'm running XP Pro SP2.
Thanks for any help you can provide! :)
Cheers,
Dave |

Two processes is normal - one monitors the other, if either crashes, the other will restart it. It's part of the Abyss crashproofing.
When running as a service, there is no icon; this is the whole point of a system service - it should be transparent to the users logged on to the system. If you want to configure Abyss while it's running as a service, use http://localhost:9999 (the console port) in your browser. You should get the same configuration screen you've been accessing via the systray.
You check the service is running using the Services control panel in Windows - check under Administrative Tools on the main control panel. |

Hmmmm...I see what you're saying. Excellent, thanks! I really like the crashproofing ;)
One note though--Abyss is running as a service on my PC right now, and I tried going to 127.0.0.1:9999 to configure it in my web browser, but I get a "page cannot be displayed" error. Yet loopback seems to be configured correctly...if I just go to 127.0.0.1, I get the webpage that I set up through Abyss.
Any thoughts on this one?
Cheers,

OK, now THAT's weird....here's what's happening:
If I go to 127.0.0.1:9999, I get a "page cannot be displayed error." Even if I hit Refresh, I get the same error. No go.
Then when I go to 127.0.0.1 (no port listed), I get my webpage. The strange thing is that at this point, if I try to go to 127.0.0.1:9999 again, I get the config login page this time, and I'm able to enter the configuration screen!
I've tried this three times, closing and opening IE each time to test, and it happens each time. Wild!
Well, it works and I can get in, but I wonder why it's doing that?

Internet Explorer is stupid when it comes to ports at the end of the website
address , you need to use http://127.0.0.1:9999 instead of what you had. |
