Yes you can do this just change the adress http://geocitiesdomain.com to http://your ip I've done that a little while ago for my site.
good luck |

thanks for the help, but now i have another question.
Ive found two different numbers for my IP Address:
209.249.20.139 and
208.191.164.152 (most common one)
but neither work in my web browser. What am i doing wrong?
edit: Also, how do i set it up to where when someone goes to my website, it goes to the abyss folder for the files? |

To allow people to view your website you have to point the server to the folder in which your website is stored on your machine....you can do this by going to the General page in the Abyss console under the appropriate host, and put the path into the "Documents Path" text feild.
As for your IP, go here http://www.aprelium.com/ip and use that IP to access your site....it's the one that's visible to the public. Also make sure you aren't running a firewall...or configure it to allow connections through port 80 (or whatever port you've said the server to use)...moreover, if you're using a router, you have a couple options to allow connections through. You can either enable the DMZ option in your router's configuration program, or under your NAT settings set it to point to your LAN IP when port 80 is receiving a request.
I'm not sure if you're behind a router or not, but I thought I would mention that anyway in case other people have that problem. Good luck! :) |

Just a tips from me, you do not use your own ip to access your own site. You use 127.0.0.1:portnumber to access your own server.
Other people use your ip to access your site, but if you have dynamic ip, the solution is to get a domain and change your nameserver to those that support dynamic ip update such as ZoneEdit.
If you only host occasionally with a dynamic ip, sure enough you can go to .tk and change your ip everytime you want someone to access your site, but it's not practical.
And as GagnierA said, you need to configure your router's NAT for the port forwarding. If the port you use for your server is not 80 (default), you need to specify port number after your ip address. (If you host with port 80 you can access your site by 127.0.0.1 instead of 127.0.0.1:port) |

Just a tip from me.....when I start a post with "To allow people to view your website" it usually means I'm trying to help him share his site with other people....telling him to use the local loopback ip isn't going to teach him anything, since it can't be accessed remotely....which is what he wanted help with. |

ok im still lost. I have a test page as the index, and im trying to reach it. Im still having problems with my ip. I dont know if this will work, but theres a option on my router to keep a static ip or get one dynamically from the ISP, same with the DNS server. Even if i set them to static i still cant get it to work. Can anyone give me some step by step help on how to get my server up? |

do you have the document root path set to the location on your hard drive where you have your test page?
Have you read any of the help files? Everything is explained quite well in the documentation....that's why they took the time to put it all together. |

You need to set up port forwarding for your ip to work if you are behind a router (there's some tutorial around). And make sure your ip is correct. To test your server you cannot use a computer in your LAN, they recognize your computer as local ip, so you need to use another computer using a different internet connection to test your webpage.
Static and dynamic IP does not matter in this issue (whether your server is working or no), and please spend some time reading each post and decide what is going wrong. |
