MySQL not starting.

I have tried downloading and installing, then uninstalling, MySQL many times. Each with no luck in getting a "green light" and starting the service successfully. I used to run it no problem back before I had a router. Could this be the route of my problem? Do I need to open any ports? If this is not the case, what are some other possible suggestions to the cause of this error?

have you put in my.ini in your windows directory???
