I currently use my xp pc to run my server but it becomes akward as it is used for general use also. Would it adversely affect the performance of my servers (http, ftp, smtp, pop, mysql) if they were run on a win98 pc with 122mhz that I have lying around?

Thats funny because I installed Abyss on an oooold Packard Bell running at 133MHz with 128MB of RAM using Windows 98 and Abyss ran very smooth. So Blackarib I would give it a try because it does work and it worked for me. Good luck!

Works fine for me on 98SE. OK, 98 OS's are not acknowledged as being the best option for running a server, but hey! It works!

Abyss will run perfectly on this machine (and Abyss works on Windows 98, it even works on Windows 95, "mcwilliams132", have you ever read the "Supported Operating Systems" section in http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/ ????)

The performance will be correct for a normal web site (with no more than 3000 hits/hour) and with little or no dynamic pages (PHP or Perl.)

blackarib - try and make a test. It is OK as http server. But php needs more CPU power. if it is small site - it is OK. But better try.

It is for starting up a web hosting business. So would I be best avoiding it?

I don't think many customers will be impressed when you say "Your site will be hosted on our state of the art 120mhz Pentium servers"...

It would be fine for hosting a personal site or two but if you're aiming to actually host a number of large sites with large numbers of visitors, you're going to need a bit more oomph ;)

120 gigs worth... I should think. Your box is not the major issue here. It's your internet connection. Specifically, the UP/DOWN file transfer capabilities. What connection are you using? Dial-up? Cable? Wishfull thinking?

Well...
As 'moose said earlier, your box will probably cope OK with serving a couple of small (and not heavily visited) sites... it's the "UPSTREAM" that is your limiting factor.
TBH, even on a hot PC (as opposed to your 122), you shouldn't even give serious consideration to operating a hosting company with that setup, given your limited capabilities. A 512K BB connection is cool for home use, but really not up to scratch for "hosting company" use...
And that's without even considering your bandwidth limitations.

What sort of speed of connection would you recommend?
There are no upload/download data transfer limits.
