I am having troube setting up an E-Mail server. I am using no-ip to update the records to my dynamic ip address.

I am new to mail servers so I am not sure how to set up the host with no-ip. A friend told me I have to create an MX record for each host. How do I do this.

Any help would be brilliant

Can I run an email server using a no-ip.com hostname?

Yes. We currently offer MX records under all of NO-IP's domains. Enter the hostname of your email server in the external mail exchanger field when modifying your host that you wish to accept mail.

Hostname is the IP of your mail server.

Do you have No-IP set up properly right now? If you do, an MX record will just be a waste of your time if Abyss and the mail server are set up on the same computer. Just set up the mail server, forward any ports on your router if you have one, and it will work. Don't jack with your DNS.

I have my free hostname pointing to my abyss webserver on port 9999 and I have tried setting up the mail server with a host that points to just my ip but it stll cannot recieve E-Mail messages through the domain.

I have forwarded all the ports that the E-Mail server uses to my main server and still no joy.

Thanks for the replys so far. I just wondered if these mx records would make my mail server recieve E-Mail and if so how do I set them with no-ip as I can see the boxes I just dont know what to put in them.

Now with No-IP, are you using a web redirect? You must use an A record if you plan to use a mail server, or else you have to use an MX record. Web redirects don't work.

I am not using a web redirect but I am going to try making a new host and starting a fresh with the webserver settings.

I have finally got it all working ok and I can send E-Mails from my hotmail account to my mail server and recieve them opk which was what the problem was.

I now need to buy the components for a dedicated E-Mail box. I just wondered what spec would you recommend for a midrange box that will serve about 70 users. I also wondered what connection should be used for an E-Mail server of this type. I currently have 2mb download 256kbs upload broadband but was thinking of upgrading to a T1 leased line connection.

Thanks for all the replys, I am really happy that this now works :)

When it comes to a mail server, you really don't need a fast internet connection. The only traffic is people downloading all of the mail from the server. Depending on how many simeltaneous users, 256Kbps may be sufficient.
