Hi, just wanted to say that Abyss is just great, a very simple and effective server to use.

I have some questions tho,

1) Is is possible somehow to mask(not sure if i used the term correctly) the server name (abyss) and put another name when a query/finger/ping is done by others? Possibly an imaginary name or something? If so, how do i go about doing it? Would be quite interesting to see the faces of people when they query me and find that i'm powered by god_made_abyss_and_its_good webserver. :)

2) I've noticed that the log file in \log is getting bigger. Is it ok if i simply just delete it away? Or do i have to manually open the file, and delete its content? Just wanted to make sure that its ok to do so.

Thanks for listening.

It is possible to delete the log file, but the server must be closed first

If you're interested, I wrote a program to automate this process, i.e., shuts down Abyss, renames access.log, restarts Abyss, pulls the data out of the former access.log, and puts it into monthly- or daily-based log files (optionally excluding specified IP-based entries). The downtime for the server consistently takes about seven seconds on my PC. At your leisure, you can delete the extracted log files whenever you like; you can schedule the running of my program as often as you like, e.g., once a week. See the "abyss-restarter" link on my page:

http://www.billanddot.com/downloads.htm

I use System Scheduler to run this, and you'll also find a link to that freeware on my page.

Regards,

Bill

The answer to question number 1 is both yes and no. From a legal stand point this would be reverse engineering Abyss. Thats not good. To my best knowledge that would probably fall under copyright infringement if you change the name to something other then Abyss. It is possible to do it though. I will not tell you how unless you get consent from Aprelium first. Contact them, if they say you can, then let me know and I'll tell you how to, otherwise I won't tell you how.

Note to Aprelium: I didn't change it on my server. I'm just saying it can be done

ok thanks for all the solutions guys :)

i din't know that legal issues were involved in question 2. But i dun think its reverse engineering, is it called ip-spoofing?? dun really know the exact term, just read about it being done somewhere.

If its that serious, then i dun think i need it anyway, just wanted to have some fun thats all. Wouldn't want any blood-sucking lawyers down my neck. Heh~

It would be reverse engineering because you mess with the internal code of Abyss (which is what displays that message).

If you want to "spoof you IP," just get yourself a proxy.

You could do it without reverse engineering if you wrote a proxy to sit between the server and the outside world and simply change the Abyss string whenever it goes past in outgoing HTTP data...

Spoofing your IP is useless if you're trying to serve web pages. If you spoofed your IP you'd just end up being uncontactable. IP spoofing is not the same as using a proxy, that's just hiding your real IP - if you spoof your IP you will not be able to receive data, and any requests sent to you will fail at the fake IP will fail. For example, you might want to spoof your IP in Ping requests to make them seem to come from someone else, but you wouldn't then be able to receive the reply...
