I am running aAbyss for Linux on a Dell 500SC using SuSe Linux 8.2. Abyss installed Ok and everything seems to be OK but I cannot acees the web site from the outside using either the site name or IP address. I have tried to configure Abyss to use Port 80 but it won't allow me to make that change as it says that this port is already in use.

I cannot find out how to remedy this problem. I need people to be able to access the site without appending the IP address or site name with another port number, i.e. :8080, etc. I can access the site via a port appended name such as xx.xx.xx.xxx:8080 (if I have 8080 in the Abyss port number configuration). I know that this issue is OS configuration related as the server I just took down ( an old Mac running Mac fttp worked perfectly).

I can find nothing on the Suse web site , or via the various search engines after hours of searching.

This is very irriatating I cannot waste much more time on this. Does anyone have any ideas before I head back to the Mac and put the Linux OS in the round file? :(

If it says that the port is already in use , i think its possible that your ISP is blocking port 80. PLease correct me if im wrong

No, I know for a fact that they are not. Also, I have tried three other web servers for this IP (two macs and an XP /Abyss box) that work fine.

I also experience this problem occasionally...
It is rather annoying, and I think it is OS based or
caused by another program.
I can get Abyss to work by restarting the whole
computer several times, but I need another solution.
I have deleted all other programs that I think may be using
the port, but how do I find out what program is using the port,
if any?

arizona,

Port 80 is said to be in use on Linux when:
* Another software already use it (such as another web server)
* If you are a regular user (not root) and you're trying to make you program use port 80. On UNIX (and Linux), only root has the right to make programs use ports < 1024.

So if you want to use port 80, you'll have to run Abyss Web Server as root. This is explained in the documentation, but we recommend reading http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1918 . You'll find there a step-by-step tutorial on how to do so and how to make Abyss run automatically on startup.

Sorry, but I cannot make this work. I don't know where to put Abyss. I had it in my home directory but that won't work with port 80. I am totally lost now. How do I login as root and still manipulate files in my home directory. The documentation is unclear. I had Abyss for Windows working great as the instructions were very clear. VERY VERY FRUSTRATING!

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYTHING WITH LINUX CANNOT HAVE EXACT STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS. It seems as when one crosses over the line from Windows or the Mac OS vagueness is the rule of day for Linux.

I'm sorry if I'm getting upset but I have spent two whole days on this and still can't get it to work! :(

Sorry to say that, but there many Linux basics that you should know before running a server and installing it on your box (these are considered as basic as dragging the mouse on the Windows desktop).

For example, one of the Linux basics is to know how to change a user and run as root. The command you have to use is
Quote:
su root
.

By the way, all this is explained in http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9175#9175 (we say what command to use), so please read it again carefully.

You're absolutely correct. I have reformatted the Dell HD, reinstalled XP and I have Abyss for windows working great. The Linux experience is over. In any event, thanks for your help.

We hope that you weren't offended by our answer. All we wanted to say is that there are many Linux knowledge that needs a lot of time to be obtained. The problem is that this knowledge is considered as "evident" by Linux geeks but there is no place to learn it from. You'll have to try and test for a long time before acquiring it.
The other problem comes from the fact that Linux distributions aren't similar. A tutorial to install Abyss Web Server as a system service on RedHat won't work on a Slackware distribution for example. Besides, your file names and paths may vary from one installation to another... So all we can do is giving some general advice.
