Hey, I have heard that most isp's don't allow server's to be used on a standard connection, and that there may be consequences if they find out you are using one. What are the real facts about this? |

I've heard mixed concerns in the past but generally most ISP's, if they allow port 80 to be open, don't mind if you run servers, but providing you keep within bandwidth limits etc. High traffic sites might be dealth with more seriously but a few html pages and images wouldn't cause much damage.
It would be best to look in your ISP's TOS/AUP to see if they do specifically allow or deny the running of servers. If they don't mention it, I usually assume they allow them.
Most residential plans say yes or no to servers depending on the ISP. Some ISP's may ask that you upgrade to the business plan if you wish to run a server.
I use VirginMedia in the UK and they don't mind the running of servers on their residential plan.
Also remember the low upload bandwidth of normal broadband. It can be lower than you think. Use www.speedtest.net to check your upload speed on a server near you. 256Kbps (30KB/s) is about the lowest you should think of running a server on your connection. The higher the better. I run my websites off a 100Mbps duplex connection on a server in Sanfransisco after outgrowing the 400Kbps (50KB/s) bandwidth at home. This is something to consider if you wish to run an intensive site.
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask more questions if I haven't answered anything you need to know. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

thanks a lot. So since I am asking questions, what security software/hardware should I have to make my server secure? |

Unless you're running lots of home brew php scripts or insecure scripts, you really only need a firewall and anti-virus installed. Also keep Abyss etc up to date and you should be fine. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

thank you, and I looked at my isp's info, it says unlimited use, so I am wondering if that means it doesn't have a bandwidth limit. But I am going to read the tos also. |

Unlimited usually means unlimited uncapped download and upload but it will come with a fair usage policy which means you can't download 100% 24/7 because it will affect other people. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

As a general rule, keep your OS, the server, and the scripts it uses up-to-date. Subscribing to a security mailing list may also help as you can receive updates about security holes/fixes in popular (and non-popular) software. Secunia has such a list and the service is free. _________________ Support Team
