To anybody,

being fairly new at a Windows-computer (always Mac's), I am as a newbie trying to get a website running. So far it works pretty easy-going, but there is one thing I can't get figured out, that's why I'll ask the question in general.

With a lot of folders/directories in the /htdocs-directory, I can allow or deny access to different directories for different users of the site. However, all directories are seen, access or not. So the question is, is it possible to hide the unaccessible folders from users that don't have access to them anyway. Putting it bluntly, it's none of their business to see what more there is to be had at my site other than what they are entitled to.

Are there any tricks or bypasses that could take care of this ??

Unfortunetaly our answer has nothing to do with my question. I read your tutorial, and a lot more, before posting my message, which has to do with the (im)possibility of hiding directories that are accessible for users other than the one user that is art that time logging in. I have no problems with the access-strategies.

Suppose I have 20 customers that I permit to download HighRes-pictures from the directory HighRes inside htdocs. They have gotten a username and a password and can access and download the pictures. Since that is logged, I can bill them later on.
Every now and then, a customers wants some pictures just for himself, so I created a directory called, say, OtherThings, in which I created directories for all the 20 customers and take care of the right access-privileges so that any customer can only access his own directory.
This has all been done, without too much trouble. But what I would like to accomplish as well is to find a way to hide for customer A inside this OtherThings-directory the directories that are for customer B and C and so on so that, when customer A has logged on and opened the otherThings-directory, he or she will only see the directory that he has access too. No need for him/her to know who else is doing business with me, is there?
Would/could there be a way to do this ?

Your answer probably lies in creating aliases. I am not sure but do not think aliases are picked up by scanners such as offline downloaders or even listed in an index.

Just get to aliases and click on the question marks. Its pretty easy to apply one and once you learn it, its like riding a bike. Good luck :)
