why can't i make it to work using jpg/jpeg extension? like this http://sig.abyssunderground.co.uk/sig.jpeg

You need to add .jpeg as a php interpreter extension.

Or you could call a folder "image.jpg" and put the PHP-file in it as "index.php". That's what I've done since phpBB didn't accept my signature if the extension was ".php".
