If you just want the DNS for that subdomain to resolve to your IP - ZoneEdit should do this :)
http://www.zoneedit.com/img/screenshot-assign.gif
The box at the bottom of that screenshot you would enter ftp into the name box and your IP into the second.
As far as FTP forwarding goes, I don't think that's possible without running a bouncer... |

Usually, most sites that do this have a seperate server (with a seperate IP address) for FTP requests. With one server, it would be the same, but remember, if you were to type "ftp.yourname.com" into a browser, only IE would recognise it as an FTP address. If you type a URL with the subdomain "ftp," IE trys port 21 instead of 80. Or if you were to enter that into a real FTP client, it would do the same. Other browsers try ftp subdomains as a regular HTTP request.
One more thing to try to ensure this works with all browsers; try putting a ":21" at the end of your IP in ZoneEdit. For instance, forward "ftp.yourdomain.com" to "12.210.225.25:21" and see if it works. (Note: I just thought of a random IP Address...) _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I've just got my new domain. It's parked and useless at the moment :( I know I'm resurrecting an extremely old thread, but I didn't want to start a new thread cause newbies usually get flamed for that. :)
I'm at yoursite.com (example) and I am running Abyss web server and Serv-U ftp server. I would like all users going to ftp.yoursite.com to access my ftp server located on port 28 (not default 21). I am using zoneedit.com for DNS because I don't think godaddy.com provides it free (??)
I've tried a webforward on zoneedit.com with little success (no success actually). It will not allow "f*p://" it says only "h**p://" are allowed. I tried using ftp.yoursite.com to redirect to "h**p://x.x.x.x:28" but when I type that into IE (most people won't be using an FTP client at my site, unfortunately) it says "cannot resolve server" or something like that. I've also tried to assign the IP (not web forwarding) x.x.x.x:28 (replace "x" with true IP) but it will not allow ":" to be used.
Does anyone know of other ways to change the port number of a subdomain? I'm not looking for a "no-ip.com" solution -- I bought a dot com for a reason :D
All help is *greatly* appreciated. Thank you.

Hey gymboy689,
I'm not sure what everyone else is trying to say but all I do is create another sub domain, for example
http//www.mrwiseone.com/ goes to 10.40.05.41
http//mrwiseone.com/ goes to 10.40.05.41
ftp//ftp.mrwiseone.com/ goes to 10.40.05.41

The original poster made this topic like over 1 year ago. I was the one that brought it back because I'm having problems adding an f*p:// protocol in the "A" record. Also, I'm having problems adding the port number (mine is *not* 21) |

If yours is not 21 then the person accessing the server has to put it into their ftp client. It wont work by adding it to your DNS A records because its not a valid input. The DNS software simply doesnt work in that way. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I guess a subdomain like "ftp.domain.com" would only be worth while if I had a different IP for my ftp server, which I don't. Is this right?
Thanks for all the support, guys. |
