I am running my own DNS for a domain I purchased on Godaddy.com. Somehow I managed to configure the SimpleDNS software
(http://www.simpledns.com/) and can now access my domain from my LAN. Accessing my site from the WAN (remote location) is a different story. I am pretty sure that it has to do with my ISP blocking port 80 because with my current setup I can still access my site via the LAN. Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem, maybe by having the DNS point to a different port other than 80? Thanks!

Can you access your site from the internet via your IP address? This is the first step you should take to make sure you are not simply having problems with ISP port blocking and Abyss.

Regarding the DNS, you're going to create an incredible amount of problems for yourself. Unless you're simply not explaining yourself clearly, you do not understand the DNS system well enough to be trying to run your own DNS server :

DNS doesn't point to a port. It resolves a domain name to an IP address. Anything you add to the URI after that is up to you, but has nothing to do with your DNS server.

DNS runs on port 53. If you haven't forwarded this on your router, no queries will reach your DNS server.

Have you considered how other user's systems will find out that you are running a DNS server? You don't simply fire one up and expect other PC's to miraculously find it.

Seriously, just go and sign up for a ZoneEdit account and use that to control your domain name instead... If you're determined to do it yourself, go and read every single tutorial at http://www.simpledns.com/tutor/ , then read them again. This is not something someone can just answer in 1 line for you.

Here is an example of a problem I am having. I have configured the simple DNS program and typed www.mydomain.com to get my site and it works on my LAN. To simulate accessing my site from a place off my LAN I used a proxy and this is the error message I recieved

"The proxy can't access that server, sorry. The owner of this proxy has restricted which servers it can access, presumably for security or bandwidth reasons. The server you just tried to access is not on the list of allowed servers."

I believe that this is due to the fact that my ISP blocks port 80. I have been trying to find a workaround for this other than dishing out an extra $30 dollars a month to unblock the port. I do not think that a Zoneedit acount will do the trick because I will run into the same problem. I have bought my own domain and would like to get it running like any other site on the net would (not using DynDns, etc.) Any other suggestions?

Are you using a proxy from some random proxy list site? It has probably been reconfigured since it was listed. That message basically means the proxy isn't configured to be allowed to visit your site, or that the proxy cannot access anything other than port 80.

If your ISP is blocking port 80, you will have to append a port number whatever method you use, however, that doesn't stop you using ZoneEdit. ZoneEdit is free and supports dynamic DNS users. It is an infinitely better way of managing your domain than trying to run your own DNS server.
