It's the strangest thing, when I browse the internet, in place of banner ads I get my abyss webserver error page! Does anyone have any idea what could cause that? (I'm not really complaining, it's kind of nice not being able to see the ads, and not using the b/w to load them, but I also worry that there's a security problem).

Thank you,
Sarah

It might be because you have a frame, which is pointing to a non-existing page on your server. Instead, Abyss shows it normal 404-message.

Are you using an Ad-blocker?
Long ago, I used PopupCop that would return any external ads as localhost.

no, I'm not using an adblocker (other than windows popup blocker) And I haven't intentionally messed with it so that it would do something like that... it's so weird! would it help if I posted the target of the ad that shows the error page? It shows my custom error page, btw...

Can you post the HTML-code here, please?

I'm sorry, but what HTML code do you mean?

when the ads show my error page, here's the supposed address of the ad (found by right clicking the ad and selecting properties)

file:///C:/WINDOWS/Application%20Data/Microsoft/Media%20Catalog/Downloaded%

I have not intentionally done anything that would make advertisments point to this address, perhaps I did something accidentally?

Have you recently run a spy-ware scan?
Some programs (like Spybot S&D) will delete and/or block certain crap and replace it with localhost.

Sorry if I'm not making sense... Here's a screenshot (don't mind the website, I'm doing some homework for a psych class). http://aughraseye.no-ip.com/lj/errorad.jpg

See the right side of this random page, where it says PAID AD, and below that a bluish screen that says "error." ? when I right click the properties of the ad, it says that the address of the ad is my error page. I can't understand why a random paid ad would link to my error page...

YES! recently, I had a trojan.vundo.b and had a hell of a time getting rid of it. This started happening after I fixed everything, including running adaware and spybot. Also, I keep getting weird warnings of Virtumonde installers, in WEIRD places like in folders on the C drive. My virus prog isn't picking it up when it apparently downloads (and I'm not downloading anything!) but only when I do the scan... also, it's usually in a compressed file. So you see, that's why I'm concerned with this weird ad problem because I'm thinking there might be some sort of security problem with my browser... I hope this all makes sense.

There was a vunarableilty with IE where a site with certian code could download anything to your computer, don't know if they would be able to excute it. But Microsoft might of fixed in an update somewhere. However, Firefox doesnt have this problem :D.

yes browser issues, lets play firefox til cracks imerge, clean your system and put on spyware blaster. and any virus removal siftware!

1. Firefox is not a game, it's a web-browser.

2. No need to use spyware-blaster, since i have Linux.

3. Antivirus are for losers.

4. Your English sucks!

So, what you're really trying to say is, "I have no clue," right? That's all you had to say...

I installed firefox, and I'm having the same "problem." http://aughraseye.no-ip.com/lj/erroradfox.jpgalso, it looks like it only happens sometimes, some ads show up but when they don't it links to my error page.

Check your Windows hosts file has not been modified by the previous trojan then been left uncorrected by whatever scanner/spyware removal tool you used to correct it.

If you're using Windows XP you'll find it in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\

The file is 'hosts' with no file extension.

Typing the following into the Run dialogue on the Start Menu will open it for you :

notepad "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts"

An unmodified hosts file will only contain

127.0.0.1 localhost

as the final line.

Firefox is an improvement over IE, but don't consider it to be 100% secure just because it isn't IE.

first dogs aint dumb! never insult dogs. They are the best animal on earth my dog could prob outsmart you anyday.

2ndly IE is shit but I must admit I use it. however I do ave 4 different browsers installed and have just started using IE 64 which seems to be better.

3rdly don't have a go at cmxflash he is cool

4thly do agree with antivirus bit of a dumb thing not to have it but then who am I to say there is nothing good for windows xp pro 64 bit edition yet so I got no antivirus either, but then again no internet because theres no drivers. Think might use linux again.

And I agree with cmxflash y not use better eng its not even shorter, use play which ones longer 2 type.
