Hi,

Ive got everything working now. I'm running the abyss server on a win 98 machine on my network. I still don't understand one thing. Why is it That i cannot view the page through the domain name? I only see it locally. This makes it difficult to test. Is there a workarounds?

Hello, Bob Norris: if I understand your problem statement, you can view your web site by using a local, private, IP address, e.g., http://192.168.0.111? But you can't access it from inside your own network if you try the domain name, e.g., http://www.yourdomainname.net/?

If you have a router between you (your network) and the internet, that's probably why. Some routers prevent you from accessing your own web site via the public IP address (i.e., the address resolved to by DNS from your domain name) if both the web server and the browser are on the same side (inside) of the router.

For a workaround, try going to a web proxy service, like http://proxify.com/ and entering your domain name there.

A second workaround: modify your HOSTS file by adding an entry that maps your domain name to the private IP address of your web server.

Let us know if that does anything.

All you have to do is route port 80 the HTTP port to the machine that runs the server, usually you have to specify a single port or you can specify a range of ports, what ever you do, the machines IP address must be known and input into the router, if you have any issues with that, the last resort and least acceptable because it causes users(visitors) issues with viewing but you can add a setting to broadcast across your network that a request at port 80 has arrived, the machine with port 80 open responds is a server is listening and running.

If you have a domain name, not all but some routers allow you to disclose the domain name in a special field... So check out your router settings and look in the manual to properly configure your settings.

In the computer world, things aARE NOT out of the box jobs, you have to configure them bits of software, if you have an out of the box mentality, your going to have to adjust the way you think because little things like not having a port open can cause you grief, so study your router, understand how it works and you will have years of trouble free configuring.

Its a breeze when you get into it.
