No, they will magically be able to connect to your PC while it is not connected to the internet.
Alternatively, yes. For people to access your site from the internet, you need to be on... the internet. Suprising eh ? |

You're expecting to be able to serve up a site on dialup ? Good luck... |

It is very possible to serve on dialup so stop your scoffing Anonymoose, all you need to do is get a tool and a DNS name from www.dyndns.org, the IP updater tool I use to use was from Kana Soloution, it has Dialup services built in so that everytime your connection goes, your dialup will automatically update the DNS name so that you have a seemingly uninterupted connection via the DNS name you use.
So you see that it is quite possible to use dialup to serve up, with careful planning like sticking large files on-line like pictures serveed via photoservers (most are free) and where possible use online space that allows you to ftp or use to serve up files from.
In the long run though, unless you upgrade to Broadband/Cable or something thats going to give you decent upstream capacity, your not going to serve much, so beware of what your getting, you may find a nice fat pipe into your home, its the up stream capacity you need to be concerned with as most home sonnections are Asymetrical with a large down stream capacity and small upstream capacity and you need a high up stream capacity and small down stream capacity, or a Symetrical service where your up and down stream capacity are the same.
You best use of the server on dialup would be for website development, and have it hosted or use the webspace that most ISP's give their customers, many peopple are unaware that the ISP gives web space, a net buddy in the USA upon asking found she has a small 10MB of space allong with email that she wasnt even using, hand for hosting pictures from...
So double check your ISP. |

Obviously it is possible. It's not going to provide any sort of useful service for people attempting to use the site though - if you're going to host your images and large files on free webspace, you might as well host the HTML as well until you get a connection that has enough upstream to support more than 1 user. |

I had just that problem, I was a dialup account and needed to support services in my ISP assigned web space.
Thats the problem at the end of the day, your ISP should not care if you run a webserver seeing as they dont give the end user the level of support that is needed but instead the morons are by their own stupidity, forcing us to run webservers in the first place.
Vicious Circle, ISP's just wont change.
In a way IM glad that they are myopic. |
