I did a search, albeit a quick one, so I hope this isn't a duplicate. Basically, on Windows XP, when I run Abyss, in the task manager there are two instances of abyssws.exe running... anyone know why? Shouldn't there only be one instance, or am I missing something here?

Yes, sorry to say, you're missing something. Abyss has a feature called "APX" that protects against crashes. Basically, the first process is the actual server serving requests, and the second monitors the first for any crashes. If it dies, it restarts the service resulting in minimal downtime.
