How do i chmod my files and all. Since im using windows, does this mean i dont have to chmod anything and all the stuff that says chmod to 777 will be just fine?

Thanks,

Hi cokacola650--

Yes, on a windows system there is no "chmod" command. In installing scripts, just ignore directives to "chmod" files and folders.

Not true!

While there is no official "chmod" there are permissions in windows and whatever user the server is running as dictates what it can access. So if you are running the server under "administrator" (in xp/2k) you can right click on a file and go to properties->security (turn off inherit and a few other things) and remove access to the file for administrator (yes you can remove yourself) and abyss will no longer be able to access the file.

ok thanks. but ive messed around with taht and i still cant get it to work. right now i dont have my site up as my computer is acting a little funny, but im trying to install a poll. i need to chmod the files to 777, i understand that means everyone can read, write, and modify the files. I thought i plugged it in under security for the files, but i guess not b/c i some crazy "file could be blah blah blah blah" error. Sorry for the extremely stupid question, but i am complete newbie to installing webservers. One mroe question, is it possible to have a domain name, for example http://blahdomianblah.com instead of the http://ip.ip.ip address for free, or would i have to get a registar?

Edit: I think I have the mysql problem solved. I just found a good tute and I'm waiting my computer to start working again.

Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate this,

After searching for "chmod," the third result came up with http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3728 (scroll all the way down).

Also, it is impossible to get a TLD Domain for free.

WHat do you mean by TLD for free? I thought that would mean Top Level Domain, as in mysite.com

I would love to get that for free...

Dot TK is ok if you are interested in running a personal site. However, Google does not feature .tk sites in their searches. So if you ever plan to be a real webite, Dot TK is not the way to go.

Dot TK is unreliable, and you get annoying pop-ups.
A good alternative would be www.active.ws or another similar service, there are plenty of these around.
They are free, with no ads or pop-ups and you can choose between several domains.

At your service,

And there is of course No-IP, CJB (www.cjb.net), and ShortURL.com.

Just don't give "mysite.kicks-ass.com" to potential clients if you are interested in making some money. :D

And there are also very cheap TLD domain registrars; 000Domains.com (my favorite) and GoDaddy.com.

LIES THERE ALL LIES

Dot tk has got popups yes but if people just read the stupid options that dot tk offers you, the DAH DAH Popups turned off

And as for google doesnt allow searches with dot tk thats another lie because i have just registerd my Dot Tk with them

if people just read things once ina while then there would be no need for help forums and Tutorials

First, they're not all lies...

Second, I heard the Dot TK from someone, so oh well... I checked it out, and there are an estimated 300,000 Dot TK websites on Google.

And by the way, there will always be use for help forums; mainly because people can't find the information/it isn't there.

I run phpBB forum myself with a help area and everything that people have posted on it are usless things because they dont read properly Someone once asked where do i find the profile pages (on my site)
Theres a big button at the top of everypage with bold print saying "PROFILE"

Thats how stupid things are getting. Forums are great but they wasnt made for people to ask annoying questions :x

I have a forum dedicated to games and programming (Loads of computer goodies)

I Admit some times i need help but i look it up or try and find it before i ask anyone!!!

I partially agree with you.

I do agree that people tend to miss the obvious; and it can get extremely annoying. However, telling people "just read" or "stop asking stupid questions" attempts to get the point across; but it does nothing. People need to have what went wrong pointed out to them, while using a constructive manner. Act like you are talking to your younger brother, but don't talk condecending. People do not listen when yelled at; I know that from personal experience.

If people are given tips on what to do and what normally works, and then practice working on it, there will be a smaller amount of stupid questions. People love to take the easy way out. Allow a couple "dumb" questions in the beginning, and then show them how to better improve their technique. If the "dumb" questions continue, then it is obvious they do not care, which it would then be ok to just forget about them.

I have a saying: "Teach people how to learn."

I'm sure I will get plenty of flames from people telling me I am a jackass, but this is just my philosophy. You can go ahead and believe whatever you want to.
