can anyone out there tell me why I cant remotely access the server console on port 9999 (default). I can access my web site on port 80 but wont that cause conflicts when i use my browser at home while my server is up. also i'm trying to fly in under my ISP's radar by using a different port and need to access the console to try various ports to see what will work.

I am guessing you are using a router. If you forward port 80 to use your webserver, you also need to forward port 9999 to access the console. (I learned that from experience).

There is a great program you can get called Remote Admin. It allows you to do absolutely anything on your computer, including transfer files or open your console, over a network or Internet. Email me if you want to know how to get it.

I would love to get a program like that. However, does it use port 137? I need to find one that only uses one port, that isn't standard; (like 523 or something).

Use an SSH server - it provides strong encryption and you can set whatever port you want to run it on whilst using it to connect to as many services on your machine as you want, so for example you could run an FTP server and VNC for remote desktop viewing but only need to open up a port for SSH connections. If you're interested I'll explain more :D If you're not bothered about encryption and high security ( 8O ) just use UltraVNC on it's own.

I already know about SSH, however I don't want to use it.

The VNC idea sounds good though; I'll give it a try.

yes you can set a specific port for Remote Admin... you can give me an email if you want to know how to get it :D or go to my site (forum), whatever... it's pretty easy to set up, and it has a file transfer thing built in if you want, easy to use.
