I'm thinking about buying a domain name from godaddy.com. They are having a sale so I want to buy it soon. If I buy it, then what. Do they re-direct my ip to my domain or what? Also, if I do the ten year plan (for $6.95 per year for 10 years) do I pay that much per year or all up front?

When you buy a domain name, all you're doing is licensing that name (which gets added to the domain name servers). Nothing else happens. For a decent writeup of the process, see...

http://www.dslwebserver.com/

...and read the whole thing.

You need to associate the domain name you bought with your IP. I do this via purchased software DirectUpdate (http://www.directupdate.net/) and the free services of ZoneEdit (http://www.zoneedit.com/).

Whether you have to pay the ten-year price up front is something that's up to the seller, and should be stated on the site (or you should ask them).

Regards,

Bill

ok, with zoneedit, how do i get it to assign 24.52.205.115:888 to my domain, because it only supports 24.52.205.115, or will i just have to type domain:888 every time?

edit: i was lookin around at zoneedit and see webforwarding. Should i just use that to direct to 24.52.205.115:888 and not have a regular ip?

I should leave that port number behind your ip right there where it is.(I think) its just like http://. Sometimes you need it and sometimes you dont. It works with it (Thats how it whas ment to be!) and (At my home) also without (But not every one has the same PC and system running on it.) so thats why have it behind my (Free) .tk domain.

Ehm if you want to experiment with domains try a free .tk domain. you can get one at www.dot.tk

Suc6 furder with you domain

i registered my domain, jeremythegeek.com, but for some reason it only works with www.jeremythegeek.com. I registered it with godaddy and I'm using zoneedit for my dns....any ideas why this would be happening?
