|
|
In your oponion, whats the best connection type (commercial) to run a dedicated home server off of?
I have a cable connection from comcast(aka AT&T's old stuff), and want to run a website. I did upstream tests on my current computer thats NOT dedicated running:
windows XP home, AMD XP 2400 @ 2GHZ (not oced), belkin wireless router (54mbps), 80 gig hd, 512mb RAM.
I got a 250-sumthin Kbps(30-sumthin KB/s). If I can only upload 30 KB/s, Im guessing it wouldnt be a good conenction to run a server off of.
Is there anything like uu.net where I can rent a differnt connection and point it to my server? CHEAP is good, remember. Also, is theconnection located remotely and they give you an IP that connects to the modem and then on? Or is the modem actaully sent to your house and you set it up like a normal modem? Remember, this server needs to be dedicated.
next, whats the best hardware to set up for a home server?
Im talking cheap, probaly non-state of the art stuff. I was looking at:
Fedora Linux distro
40 gig hd at the max
AMD XP 1800+
256mb RAM
Thanks fo any input. |

it is best that you don't become a web host if you have 30 kb upload
speed , just stick with hosting your own sites , I have like a 30 kb up speed and my website has very nice performance just hosting one site. |

I dont want to become a webhost.
Nowhere in my post did I say that.
If you're thinking when i said "run a server" I meant abyss to host my website.
But from your post I did read taht 30 kb/s is enough to run a good wesbite, thanks.
Can anyone answer my other questions? |

Random imput:
I just ran a test to check my speeds...
Your download speed : 882583 bps, or 882 kbps.
A 107.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 907852 bps, or 907 kbps.
For hardware, this may not help but i'm running a very cluttered up 98 and it is still going very fast.
350 or so of ram and... Err, forgot the disk space... _________________ New image comming soon...

Jeez, what kind of connection do you have?
Thanks for input too, anyone else help? Other people might view this thread a sa resource for similar questions, I can't be the only abyss begginer wondering what kind of hardware one would need, or connection speed. =) |
