I will try to keep this brief. I have had Abyss Web server stop working on 3 different occasions with no way i could find to fix it. My firewall logs and other internet security apps have never indicated hacking, but I can't rule out the possibility that my home network and comps have been compromised. I am interested in anyone's thoughts on this. Here is the info on my system and the history of the troubles.

My network:

-Older Win98 SE box, all MS updates in place, Norton Antivirus, Sygate Firewall
-Very fast, hot WinXP Pro box, all MS security updates, Panda Antivirus and internet security, Windows Firewall
-Linksys BEFSR41 Router
-1.5 MB DSL connection

History of troubles:

-Older version of Abyss installed on 98SE box, working for a couple of years with no problems.
-Old version stopped working one day, so upgraded to X1 version. This worked fine for about a week, then stopped working. (The app loaded, connected normally as far as I could tell, but there was no routing of data out of my computer. ) Deleting and reloading all Abyss files did not fix the problem. I found no faults in the firewalls in the router or local firewall. I could not find a workaround.
-Loaded Abyss X1 into the XP Pro box and it worked fine for a few months, then it stopped working, the same way as in the 98SE box. I checked all firewall settings. They appeared to be the same. I deleted all Abyss files, re-installed Abyss, but it will still not route to the web.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Did you try turning your firewall(s) completely off to see if your site comes up?
Are you sure your router isn't giving the server pc a new LAN IP?
Did you check to see if your ISP started blocking the port # that Abyss uses?

These are just a few queries to narrow down your problem. ;)

Thanks for the quick reply, Moxxnixx.

Yes, I did turn off firewalls and antivirus apps to see of they were interfering. That did not help.

I am not sure how to see if my ISP started blocking a particular port. I am using 8080 for Abyss. I suppose I can call their tech support. But it seems that port worked fine for a time after each virgin installation. So if the port was blocked, it should have been always been blocked, right? But I will try to find out. I can also try another port.

I wish I was a bit more knowledgable. I am not sure I know how to even check of the router is giving the server PC a Lan IP. The way it is set up, when I check the Router I see the IP that I get from my ISP. I also see a Static DNS1 and another Static DNS2. In the Local Network, the router has an IP of 192.168.1.1 Under the DHCP client table, my two comps have local IP addies of 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101. As I mentioned earlier, this configuration has always been in place, and always worked initially. As far as I know, nothing changed, unless someone got into my machine and did some dirty work. I am at a loss.

I will check with the ISP and also experiment with other ports. But I am still anxious for any other suggestions people may have.

Thanks again for your help, and thanks in advance to anyone else who jumps in here.

Dale

Not neccesarily. Your ISP might have changed their terms of service without notifying you.
Go to this site to see if your server port is open. Make sure to type the correct port #.

But, regardless of whether or not your ISP blocked any ports, you would still be able to
access your site thru http://localhost:8080 and http://localhost:9999 (the Abyss console).
Are you saying these don't work, either?

BTW - you said Abyss loads when you start it? What does it say in the little window when
you right-click the Abyss icon and choose Restore?

You didn't mention anything about port forwarding. Are you certain you forwarded the
correct ports in your router configuration? Take a look at the following guide to be sure...
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/BEFSR41v2/HTTP.htm

If that's not the correct router guide, go to this page to choose the right one...
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
Then, choose HTTP on the next page.

Details here --> http://stephen.calvarybucyrus.org/tutorials/manual_IP/manual_IP.php

I'd believe your router is assigning the server its IP address. You have to forward whatever port you're using for the server to the server's IP address. If you don't manually set the server's IP, it can change -- and then no server traffic will get through.

Try connecting to the server from your other computer. This will bypass your router and any ISP restrictions. Open up Internet explore and got to http://192.168.1.101:8080/ (or what ever the ip address is of the server) and see if you can view the page that way.
