I am running a Belkin wired Router and using no-ip for my DNS. I am confused because I have recently purchased the router. I believe I have it set up... Which IP would I direct the DNS to? The one that appears in the Local Network Connection Status window that you get from double clicking on the icon of the computers in the Task Bar, or would I just go with the one that is assigned through IP detection by no-ip? If it helps, I am unable to access the webcontents of the servers through port 80.
http://lightland.no-ip.org/ - Using no-ip address assigned with port 80
http://lightland.no-ip.info/ - Using router assigned IP address, can access with this while on the host, but not on the other computer or the one I am currently using. |

NO-IP should be associated with your external IP which means the IP assigned to your router/modem by your ISP. Note that the No-IP client (Called DUC) takes care of that automatically.
The IP you get on your computer is a local one and is only useful to connect to your computer inside your network (in other words it is only valid behind the router and invalid elsewhere).
We suggest reading the following general guide to know how to make your server accessible (depending on the computer location) and how to configure a domain name. Note that nothing special should be done on Abyss Web Server's side.
Locally (from your computer), you can use 127.0.0.1 or localhost to access the server. The full local URL is displayed in Abyss' main window (Local web server URL).
To access your machine from another computer on your network (LAN), you should use the LAN IP of the computer. Run the Windows command ipconfig in a DOS command box to know this IP (it is usually of the form 192.168.*.* where * are numbers ranging from 0 to 255). This LAN IP works only inside your LAN.
To access the server from the outside, people should use your router's WAN IP (or external IP). It is the IP assigned to it by your ISP. This WAN IP can be known by browsing http://www.aprelium.com/ip from your computer. If you have a router, you must configure it to forward incoming requests to the web port to your computer so that Abyss Web Server can respond to them. The web site http://www.portforward.com/ contains step-by-step port forwarding configuration instructions for most routers.
If your WAN IP changes often, You'll need to use the services of a free DNS provider that can track those IP changes and give you a DNS name. We suggest looking at http://www.dyndns.org or at http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Internet/Servers/Address_Management/Dynamic_DNS_Services/?tc=1 . This way, you'll always access your server using an address like http://www.yourserver.freednsprovider.com without paying attention to IP changes (and nothing should be configured on Abyss Web Server X1's side. It will recognize it automatically).
You can also buy a top level domain name (for example, my-company.com) and use the associate your external IP with it using the registrar services or the free http://www.zoneedit.com/ . You can find more information about this topic in http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/domain-name.html . You can also find many messages and discussions on our forum http://www.aprelium.com/forum about DNS and domain names.
If you have problems to make your server reachable from the outside, we recommend reading http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/faq.html#A1-2 .
Notice that if you are using Windows XP, you must correctly configure its internal Firewall: open the control panel, select the Networking section and open the properties of your network interface. Select the Advanced Tab and press the Parameters button (it should be in the bottom of the page). This button will open a dialog where you can allow incoming connection to some ports. If Abyss Web Server uses port 80, check the Web Server (HTTP) line.
If it uses another port, press Add... and enter the number of the port Abyss uses as the internal port (select TCP and fill the other parameters following the descriptions).
To test your external site accessibility, we recommend using a proxy service such as http://www.proxify.com (you can find a more extensive list of sites providing proxy service in http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Proxying_and_Filtering/Hosted_Proxy_Services/Free/CGI_Proxy/ ). It will help you see how the rest of the world sees your site by browsing it remotely for you and giving you the results (this is often easier than asking a friend to test it for you). _________________ Support Team

Another problem has come up. I have every set up correctly, but now I am unable to access the server on any port using the domain, IP, or 127.0.0.1
However I can still access it using localhost. I cannot access it using my WAN IP.
I have many random ports, and it still does not allow access. I can still access the console via 127.0.0.1:9999
Edit: After another check... I can nolonger access from localhost |

Twar3Draconis,
Abyss (as any application) cannot run if your computer is not running (or is sleeping). So you'll have to turn off the standby mode and hibernation if you want your site to be available 24/24. _________________ Support Team

Twar3Draconis,
Have you restarted your computer since the router portforwarding configuration. Chances are that your computer is configured to use DHCP (to get a different IP from the router each time it is turned on) and so the local IP you used for port forwarding is no more valid.
To solve the problem, you'll have to make your computer's local IP static ( see http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm ) and to update the port forwarding rule with this new fixed IP. _________________ Support Team
