I apologize if this is a dumb question. I just set up my PC as a web server - WinXP SP2. In the windows security center, I have Abyss Web Server listed as an exception, but in the advanced firewall settings everthing is shut off. However; I can still access my site. I would have expected that to be closed unless I allowed HTTP connections in security center. Is this right?
One more stupid question - since I'm opening up my computer as a web server, can any hacker just get to any file on my PC?
Thanks. |

get rid of SP2 it causes more issues than it actually solves, admittedly you have some benefits of code fixes but in general, SP2 is proving to be a big problem, some users have had their trusty machine with SP1 screwed up completely with SP2 install and wont allow the user to use their LEGITAMTELY PRUCHASED MACHINES!
So in simple terms, ditch SP2. |

don't listen to that person. I have SP2 and it works just fine for me.
Okay, first of all, yes, hackers CAN access your system, but they need to do it the way they would on a computer with no webserver.
And no, they can't access any file on your system by using abyss, just the file or directory you choose to make your webfolder. |

Excuse me?
Dont listen to that prat.
Yes, your PC is vunerable if you dont run some basic internet security, even if you have a system that can be exposed by a vunerability doesnt mean that your vunerable when running a firewall. Did you even consider that?
if you just google for XP SP2 problems, IM sure you'll be overwhealmend by the sheer quantity of atricles that even report security issues with SP2. |

yes, but 90% of those "security problems" go away as soon as you use a "secure" browser. as most of the problems are caused by Ms' attempt at a secure lump of s***!!.
