|
|
I'm having some issues with Abyss.
When I had cable it worked like a dream, unfortunately I moved and now have Direcway satellite internet, I am also going through a Netgear DS104 hub, I looked on PortForwarding but it has nothing for the DS104, others have told me you don't need PortForwarding with a hub.
The problem I'm having is that with or without the Hub, when I put in my IP address I get the Direcway System Control Center.
When I type in the local IPA (http://192.168.0.5:9998/) for the comp. on the network thats running abyss, on any comp on the network, I get my page. Yet when I type in the IP with the port number I get page cannot be displayed. If I type in my IP number without the port number I get my System Control Center page.
Any ideas?

Hubs do not have port forwarding therefore they will not pass the request throught. You will need a router in order to use your satellite connection with abyss. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

As I said before it's doing the exact same thing regardless of the Hub being in the loop or not.
When I unplug the hub "http://192.168.0.5:9998" brings up the site for me, but "http://192.168.0.1" brings up my DirecWay system control center and "http://192.168.0.1:9998" brings up 'page cannot be displayed' (All regardless of the hub being plugged in, it is unplugged now.). My Real IP address plus the port 9998 brings up 'Page Cannot Be Displayed', my Real IP address by itself brings up the DirecWay system control center.
Will buying a router fix this issue, or will I have the same problem?
At this point I'm stuck I don't have any idea what to try next, please if anyone can offer suggestions let me know.
Thanks,

Make sure your ISP doesn't block port 9998. _________________ Compu-Geek.org coming back soon |

ISP's never block random ports such as 9998. 21, 25, 80, 1024 and 8080 maybe, but not 9998. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

That's because you need to add the port to the end of the "real" IP address.
For example: Your-IP:9998
The reason is that port 80 is the default port not 9998. So if you had the sever on port 80 all you would need to type would be your "real" IP.
But you have it on 9998, so you need to add that to the end of the IP.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: never mind

No, really, they don't. Also, dont post multiple posts one after eachother. Learn to use the "edit" button. Memebers of the forum get annoyed when you post multiple posts. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

OK, which problem are you still having? Are you still getting your system control center page when you type in your internet IP address? _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Basically, the box provided for satellite internet (192.168.0.1) cannot handle loopback - a common problem with home routers too. When you directly connect to 192.168.0.1 you will get your standard setup pages - when you connect to your internet IP, you also get them because the box does not know how to send out traffic which would be sent directly back to its own IP. Instead you get the local pages. Connections to any ports other than port 80 will fail because the port forwarding cannot loop directly back on itself.
Buying a router won't solve this if you still need whatever gizmo has been provided by the satellite internet ISP connected in front of it - sorry.
If you search the forum for hosts file you should find the workaround for this commonly used when a router doesn't support loopback. _________________

Most of the home routers now are beggining to support loopback, but the companies perfer not to call it loopback. They tend to call it
A fix for the inbound connections from the local network using the WAN ip or Domain Name
The latest firmware brought out by Netgear addresses this issue. :D
P.S. I made the tutorial on how to modify the hosts file :D
