I've got The Freeware Abyss server Edition thing. And I'm Hosting many of files that are a good 100-300 Megs. And I'm not sure how to Change the Bandwidth rate maybe?Well I've changed it in the Global Bandwidth Option. But it didn't seem to make a difference.. To make it possible so they Transfer files quicker. I'm on atleast a Meg Cable Connection. I'm not sure. My Internet thing says 100 Mbps. But That's Network wise but I'm the only one on my Cable network because I live in a small neighborhood. But If anyone can tell me That'd be Great.

VampireKid,

Most ISPs give you your download speed when they advertize their offers. But your web server has to upload data to the visitors and so depends on the upload speed of your ISP which is usually lower than the download speed.

Ask you ISP about your upload speed. You should also keep in mind that this speed is the maximum. But in practice, it varies depending on the ISP network load and on various other parameters.

Abyss Web Server will serve the files at the maximum rate allowed by your network. But as you can guess, it can't send data at a rate faster that what your ISP connection can accept.

You can find out your upload speed by doing a speed test, here is one i use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ just click a server to the left and it will start

this is my result below.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1770 kbps (221.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 234 kbps (29.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Mine are:

Download Speed: 1916 kbps (239.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 185 kbps (23.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

and I host AbyssUnderground.co.uk on it at a limited rate of 10KB/s. It seems fast enough for most people.

Have fun everyone!

lol, you wont get 200KB/s from a 30KB/s connection, maybe 200Kbps. There is a very big difference between KB/s and Kbps.

100Kbps is roughly 10KB/s. To get it exact divide the Kbps by 8 and times KB/s by 8.

Kbps > KB/s divide by 8
KB/s > Kbps multiply by 8

The connection to your server is only able to go as fast as the slowest part of the connection. So if you can upload at 100 Kbps, but the client computer only has a download rate of 56 Kbps. The connection will only run at 56 Kbps, as it is the slowest part of the network.

This is a little off topic, but....

The same can be said for a computer....

How is that off topic? Its true but I dont see how it doesnt have anything to do with this topic.

Most broadband connections do not give an upload speed above 512Kbps which is roughly 50KB/s so there is no chance of having 200KB/s speeds.

Hehe...be sure to do a speedtest against a non-busy server near you.
I did the test against the New York server. I live in Sweden.
I got :
Download Speed: 621 kbps (77.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3226 kbps (403.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

That's not near my real speeds. Funny how it looks like a reverse ADSL.)
So...the server had obviously a high load at the time. But i think the line was fine because of the somewhat more true upload speed.

Jealous, someone ? :o)

You sure you havent got the upload and download mixed up there? Generally upload is the lower of the two values...

Nope. The result was copied. That's what it said.

Just to brag a little...i did a speed test against a swedish server.

DL = 7.88 Mbit/s - TCP ; 8.10 Mbit/s - UDP
UL = 4.35 Mbit/s - TCP ; 7.49 Mbit/s - UDP
% of available bandwidth ; DL = 97.3 UL = 58.1

....cheeky bastards, i'm paying for 8Mbit upload but have yet never experienced that speed. The record is 6Mbit. There's no mention of the fact that they seem to be unable to guarante the advertised upload speed.

I pay for 24 mbit/s, but i always get faster than that. The record when downloading from Sunet is 29 mbit/s.

Here's my speed through my wireless internet connection both ways (Wireless & Ethernet):

Speakeasy speed test:

Wireless Connection (Alanta, GA):
Download Speed: 2932 kbps (366.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 318 kbps (39.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Ethernet Connection (Alanta, GA):
Download Speed: 2952 kbps (369 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 300 kbps (37.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

My internet provider's speed test:

Wireless Connection (Location UNKNOWN):
Download Speed: 3.0 Mbps
Upload Speed: 325.7 Kbps

Ethernet Connection (Location UNKNOWN):
Download Speed: 3.0 Mbps
Upload Speed: 326.6 Kbps

P.S. Within the next two months, I'm getting the 6.0 Mbps connection from my internet provider.

JLP - That's interesting. No real difference between wireless and ethernet.
I've been thinking of using some wireless connections. What speed is it on the wireless? 11, 22, 54 or 108 Mbps?
CMX - I could have gone for the 24Mbps but thought it was kind of overkill. I seldom get full download speed on my current 8Mbps line, using my p2p or direct dl from sites i use. There's too much congestion (and low speed modems) on the net to get those really blazing speeds.
